About Richard Oreffo
Richard Oreffo holds the chair of Musculoskeletal Science and is co-founder of the Centre for Human Development, Stem Cells & Regeneration serving as inaugural Director to September 2021. Richard served as Director of Enterpise and Associate Dean International and Enterprise within the Faculty of Medicine (2005-2013) transforming the enterprise and international agenda within the Faculty and established the University Industry Sector Theme Health and Pharma and was the first Director. He is the Founder of The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation- raising money for disadvantaged Black British students to attend Universities in the UK. Richard graduated from the University of Liverpool and University of Oxford. After three years in San Antonio Texas, with Prof Greg Mundy working on Bone Remodelling, Richard returned to establish a bone research programme at Zeneca Pharmaceuticals followed by a return to the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford. In He was appointed to a lectureship at the University of Southampton, a Readership in 2002 and a Personal chair in 2004. Richard leads a multidisciplinary research group focused on developing strategies to repair bone & cartilage and understanding bone development. He serves / has served on a number of Research Council Committees and was awarded, in 2010, the Medical and Healthcare Sector of the Engineer Technology and Innovation Awards and overall Engineer Grand prix award. Richard has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers, including breakthrough publications on skeletal stem cells in Nature Materials, ACS Nano, Stem Cells, Small and holds 7 patents. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, holds a number of visiting professorships and Advisory Board positions on EU/SME and Pharma. His research led to the first 3D titanium bone stem impaction graft operation in the UK. He is founder / CSO of Renovos Biologics Limited; is on the editorial boards of 5 journals, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, in 2015 was awarded a DSc by the University of Oxford. Richard was elected a Fellow of International Orthopaedic Research in 2019 and has also been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
