In the summer of 2021, I completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Hull where I studied BSc Geography, achieving a First-Class Honours, and covered a range of physical and human topics such as sustainability, urbanisation, conservation, coasts, rivers, geopolitics and natural hazards. Throughout my 3 years of study, I learnt through multiple different approaches including: lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals, computer practicals and field trips. Fieldwork was carried out over a 4-month period for my 3rd year dissertation. Along the coastline at Hornsea Beach, East Yorkshire, I investigated coastal management and it’s implications for coastal erosion, using GIS software to examine for analysis. Both primary and secondary data were used to reach conclusions. I have completed the position of Post-Flood Recovery Research Intern over a 12-week period for the Mapping the Flood Recovery Gaps project, a collaboration between the University of Hull, Flood Innovation Centre and the Aviva Foundation, which looks to address and improve post-flood recovery support. For more information on my internship, please see the blog post I have written: https://floodinnovation.co.uk/post-flood-recovery-research-intern-my-experience/ I also have over 2 years experience as GIS Engineer for the telecoms company Freedom Fibre, with my primary responsibility setting up and maintaining projects on the GIS system APX; this involved uploading shapefiles, extracting UPRN data and importing various elements (eg. splitterboxes, UPRNs, ducts, pia, cables). QGIS was also used alongside APX to assist project set up and maintenance. Other responsibilities included user management of the APX system, GIS system user audits for both internal and external teams, creating project PDF maps, ETL backups, HTML coding, documenting team processes, testing software updates before installation, liaising with external developers and teams, training employees on how to use GIS and assisting in staff interviews. I have most recently worked as a Research Assistant at executive search firm HW Global where I was responsible for identifying and qualifying candidates for a variety of consumer/FMCG roles, working with global companies such as Oatly and Amplifon. I had calls with candidates, wrote reports, arranged interviews, liaised with clients, researched markets, conducted statistical analysis and maintained databases.
