About Roula Salam

I am a licensed RCIC since 2020 and a lecturer at the University of Alberta since 2012. I am also a certified Arabic-English translator and the past President of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta for two mandates. I hold a PhD degree in Literature from Queen’s University, Ontario specializing in Postcolonial Studies across the Middle East and Africa. I first came to Canada as an international student in 2005 to make a better life for me and my family and I have been working in academia and translation in Canada since then. During the course of my academic career, particularly during the Arab Spring and the consequent turmoil in different parts of the world, I became increasingly interested in refugee and migration studies, which I incorporated into my own research. I also became curious about immigration policy and law, and decided to learn more about that field. I have been teaching research communication skills, language and intercultural communication at undergraduate and graduate levels at the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta since 2012. I also work extensively on curriculum development at U of A, and work closely with graduate international students, helping them with language skills and intercultural communication. I am a strong EDI advocate and am involved in EDI work at the U of A. I worked and trained for one year as an intelligence officer with 6 Intelligence Company (Reserve Intelligence Unit of the Canadian Forces) in Edmonton, Alberta.
