About Rubesh Hassamal

Ever since my graduation from Trinity College in June 2007, I have taken all opportunities that were given to me to learn and reinforce my experience. I have worked in different departments, and nurtured my passion for emergency care from the day I started working. In 2008, I joined General Surgery Department, the Orthopaedic Department and internal Medicine for my internship in Singapore General Hospital. After my internship, I joined a variety of surgical units in Singapore, Ireland and New Zealand from May 2009 to June 2014, the experience that I acquired over the years motivated me even more in the field of general surgery. I moved to South Africa in 2014 with the aim to enhance my exposure and complete the FCS fellowship program. I have worked in the surgery department at the University of Cape Town, and in the surgery department at the University of Kwa Zulu-Natal in Durban. This experience in South Africa has brought a lot of insight in the varied spectrum of disease pathology and surgical management of those in this setting and has been an invaluable addition to my experience. This academic program in Kwa Zulu-Natal University has provided me with the opportunity to attend and present at post-graduate lectures, meetings, seminars and workshops. It has certainly been a very enriching experience and helped me with expand my knowledge. I am an enthusiastic educator and have demonstrated that by being actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students, this ranging from bedside tutorial, outpatient teachings to lectures. I have also been involved in research projects and had the opportunity to present at the College Health of Sciences Research Symposium in 2018 for the “Validation of the Pediatric Resuscitation and Trauma Outcome (PRESTO) Model in Injured Children in a South-African Quaternary Trauma Centre. I am a current Fellow of Colleges of Surgeons (South Africa). Both my experience in academic and non-academic centres have developed my acumen for quick diagnosis, work up and management of seriously ill patients. I am able to work in resource constraint situations, stabilise patients and be part of the management of patients.
