About Ryan Frayne

My PhD thesis work focused on ice hockey goaltender biomechanics. This work fostered a research relationship between the University of Western Ontario and Reebok-CCM hockey. We have successfully obtained an NSERC Engage grant, NSERC CRD and Ontario Centres of Excellence grant to investigate the effect that goaltender equipment has on the human body. The NSERC Engage project developed and verified a novel kinematic marker set that quantifies goal pad motion and hip kinematics of a goaltender when they are wearing goalie equipment. The NSERC CRD grant builds on our previous Engage research by implementing force transducers to develop a protocol capable of estimating joint forces and moments when goaltenders are wearing goalie equipment. My particular interests include goaltender hip, knee and ankle kinematics and kinetics when performing butterfly movements in goalie pads of varying fit and stiffness.
