About Sam Gunner

I am an enthusiastic and talented engineer who believes that technology can be used to make the world a better place. My research focuses on the design and deployment of technology. I regularly develop and manufacture novel electronic systems which I then deploy into the real-world to uncover new insights about the world around us. To do this I combine a range of technical and non-technical skills include PCB design (using KiCad), 3D CAD (using Onshape), software/firmware development (Python and C++), networking and computer skills (Linux) and project management. Technology systems I have developed and deployed recently include a wireless structural health monitoring system that was installed onto the Clifton Suspension Bridge, data logging devices that connected into Bristol’s urban traffic control system, and air quality monitoring hardware that connected directly into the electrical system on an electric scooter and was fitted to the Voi rental fleet in London. Before my PhD I gained many years of industry experience, including as a Telecommunication and Networking engineer for Transport for London, and as a Electronic and Electronic Design Engineer for Power Systems UK. Out side of work I am an enthusiastic cycle tourer, my wife and I having done tours through England, the Alps, and six months through South East Asia where we cycled miles between Singapore and Mumbai, passing through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma) and India. I am also an enthusiastic home brewer and can now make some pretty drinkable beer.
