About Sandra van Assen

Sandra is urban planner and architect, working as an independent professional in the Northern provinces of the Netherlands and as urban planner for the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân. In addition, she is an external PhD Candidate at the TU Delft. Sandra van Assen graduated in at the TU Delft - faculty of Architecture with landscape architecture as an additional subject. Before her graduation she worked at West 8 landscape Architects and GDA architecture and studied landscape architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Thereafter, she specialized and received a grade in urban planning. She was urban planner in Rotterdam for eight years at KAAP 3 while simultaneously teaching landscape architecture and urban planning at the TU Delft. With a team of researchers and designers she won the Harry de Vroome Price for the research ‘Old villages, new perspectives’. In 2007 she established her own office “Sandra van Assen Stedenbouw/Urbanism” with a focus on sustainable and healthy urbanism that values unique spatial characteristics. From 2008 till 2013 Sandra was Provincial urban planner for the Frysian province. In 2013 she joined the Research Group Future Urban Regions, a network research program, where she specialized in energy transition and healthy urbanism. After 2016 she invested her knowledge in the Energy Workplace Fryslan, an independent organisation supporting grassroots energy initiatives in Fryslân. Additionally, she started her Phd titled 'Q-factor' on place quality advice practices together with José van Campen in 2017. Parallel she became Urban planner in the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân in 2018 and advisor at MOOI Noord-Holland.
