About Sashoya Simpson

Sashoya is a Jamaican-born storyteller whose wings have been nurtured within the arms of elders, young ones and mentors, directly and indirectly. The art she embodies is heavily based in Caribbean folklore and told through theatre performance, storytelling, visual art and literary practices. The stories she tells are for her nieces, nephews and future children to see themselves being represented and also serve as an introduction for the many diasporic children of Caribbean descent who are unaware of these art and cultural histories. Preserving something doesn’t mean to stop practicing. She writes for the young ones and in doing so, renewing the times of the old. I speak so it can be heard. I create so it can be seen. I teach so it can be passed on.
