About Sen Shen

Currently, I am a research associate specializing in Optical Communications at the University of Bristol, where I also contribute as a Graduate Teacher. In my teaching role, I oversee lab sessions focused on Data Centre Networks and Raspberry Pi-based Software Defined Networking (SDN). My research is centred on enhancing Quality of Transmission (QoT) estimation in optical networks through ML techniques. This involves deploying Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) on accurate QoT estimations and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for short-term performance forecasting. I have also investigated the potential of optical telemetry in bolstering AI engines and digital twins in optical networks. Throughout my previous research, I have acquired substantial knowledge in applying ML techniques in optical networks, complemented by hands-on experience at the UK National Dark Fibre Facility (NDFF). I am passionate about improving QoT estimations in optical networks by leveraging ML algorithms and analytical models, such as the Gaussian Noise model. Moreover, I am dedicated to advancing digital twin technologies and ML-driven monitoring and telemetry platforms in optical networks. I am eager to exchange ideas and collaborate with peers from both academia and the industry who share similar interests.
