About Sergi Valverde
Dr. Sergi Valverde obtained the degree in Informatics Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in a program focused on Computer Graphics and Artificial Intelligence. His PhD Thesis entitled “Evolution and Dynamics in Information Networks” was advised by Prof. Ricard Solé within the Doctorate Program of the Physics Department at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya. A long-term collaborator of the ICREA-Complex System Lab (headed by Prof. Ricard Solé), first as Post-Doctoral researcher (2004 - 2007) and later as Visiting Professor at the Degree of Biomedical Engineering of the University Pompeu Fabra (2008-2017). In 2018, Sergi started his own research lab, the Evolution of Technology Lab at the Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (CSIC-UPF). At the beginning of his professional career he worked as R+D engineer at the newspaper "El Periodico de Catalunya", developing the production system and machine translation software. Later he moved to the video game industry, first working as R+D engineer and later as Lead Physics Programmer in the videogame ProRally 2002 (PS2 & NGC) at Ubisoft Entertainment. Experienced lecturer and researcher with more than 15 years of expertise in the areas of complex systems, artificial intelligence, computer simulation, and computer graphics. Published more than 60 articles in network science, systems biology, collective intelligence and technological and cultural evolution. Extensive international collaborations with scientists in Europe (Spain, France), UK and US (Santa Fe Institute and Georgia Tech). I was an active participant in the three major IST FET FP6 projects in Complex Systems (PACE, ECAgents and DELIS), another project funded by the James McDonnell Foundation and the project MESOMORPH. Currently coordinating the project NEWS, funded by the Spanish Agency of Science and Technology.
