About Shane Ross

I study the hidden dynamics that shape motion, from spacecraft navigating the Earth–Moon system, to microbes crossing oceans, to animals gliding through air. My work blends nonlinear dynamics, mathematical modeling, and experimentation to reveal insights that impact space exploration, biosecurity, defense, and bio-inspired engineering. I’m an Endowed Chair Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech, where I lead the Ross Dynamics Lab. With followers, I use this space to connect science, engineering, and policy communities working on problems that matter. Research areas include: • Orbital mechanics and multi-body space mission design • Space domain awareness for xGEO and cislunar space • Atmospheric and oceanic transport and biosecurity • Drone technology for sensing and response • Animal and human biomechanics and complex systems Our work has been supported by NSF, NASA, the U.S. Air Force and Space Force, USDA, and NIH with more than $17M in funding. Current projects include cislunar and xGEO operations, microbial transport studies, and bio-inspired flight. I share research widely: from teaching thousands of students and publishing free online lectures (1M+ views/year) to giving invited talks at MIT, Caltech, ETH Zurich, and NASA. My work has been featured in Nature, Scientific American, BBC, and more.
