About Sharon Selby

During high school and my early undergraduate years, I was at best a reluctant student. Eventually, I found my niche in English Literature, but it was the encouragement and support of some exceptional teachers that saved me academically and shaped my future career path. I was inspired to become a teacher not only because I am passionate about literature and writing but because I am also deeply committed to making education accessible to all students, including those who don’t necessarily fit the traditional academic mold. To me, helping students to develop their own skills of analysis and self-expression is deeply rewarding. Consequently, in addition to my enthusiasm for study and publication, I am deeply committed to teaching and student learning. As COMM coordinator at Fanshawe College, I've had the opportunity to extend the reach of my teaching commitments through curriculum development, administrative problem solving, and supporting students and faculty. I've become part of a team within SLLS and beyond, and it has been deeply rewarding to collaborate across the college with colleagues in other parts of the college. To me, communication skills are the key to student success in both the academic and professional world. In my joint roles as professor and coordinator, the greatest reward is seeing students find and grow their voices to become confident and accomplished communicators.
