About Shay Winslow

Shay Winslow is an artist from the small town of Chester, Connecticut who began drawing as a child. He attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Design for 3 years, the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts for 1 year, and is currently an Illustration student at the University of New Haven. Alongside school, he hosts, as well as manages Primeval Age, an online paleo community and art based RPG. When he isn't making art, he can be found tending to his many plants, fawning over invertebrates or reading up on new paleontology finds. Artist Statement: Shay’s mother was a trained architect and he learned gestural and sketching practices from a trained architect early in his art career. This heavily influenced his artistic process as he tends to work with many straight lines; mapping things out as if they were polygonal in order to set them in their environment. While he has experience with oil painting, he typically finishes illustrations off digitally; as he has done since 2010. Shay Winslow’s work has strong ties to nature; both present and past. He is fascinated by all living things with a particular interest in paleontology and prehistoric plants, bugs, and animals. While inspired by the world around him, he tends to work with muted and muddy palettes, aiming to give the viewer a sense of intimacy and isolation with the figures and environments portrayed. While Shay’s artwork may feature emotional elements and themes, his main focus and interest lies with both anatomical and technical proficiency and accuracy in his works. Any emotional content in his works is not without complimenting the existing technical aspects. This proficiency also extends to his knowledge of the art programs he uses to create his digital works. Much of this rigidity and precision is residual from being trained and raised around architects.
