About Shekema S. Dunlap

Dr. Shekema Dunlap (nee Silveri) is an educational advocate and change agent. Her adult learning, educational leadership, and higher education qualitative research explores the influence of Revolutionary Love as it intersects with Black Feminist Epistemology and Fugitive Pedagogy in academic spaces. Dunlap's publications emphasize Black women educators' and school founders' roles in the ever evolving struggle for liberation through cultural responsiveness and equity in PK-16 settings. Throughout her 19-year tenure as public and private schools, Dunlap required students and teachers to produce evidence of learning, justify their perspectives, evaluate their reasoning, and set their future goals. As part of her well-rounded approach educational leadership and administration, Dunlap combined various theoretical approaches to adult learning, educational leadership and management, and organizational development. When coaching, she relies on transformative coaching in the style of equity expert Elena Aguilar. Dunlap's transgressive work as a classroom teacher was featured on CNN’s Perry’s Principles, NBC’s Education Nation Teacher Town Hall Atlanta, and America Achieves. Through these methods, Dunlap's students not only learned the information but also came to understand the pedagogy behind it, which is why her AP Literature classes were consistently filled to capacity and include students who are not normally on honors or AP track. Dunlap is a published, peer-reviewed author and frequently presents at educator conferences. She currently serves as Chair of NCTE's Public Language Awards Committee. For more information, visit
