About Sima Barzegar

I received my B.Sc. degree in 2010 and the M.Sc. degree in 2013, in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Sahand University of Technology, Iran. In 2022, I completed my Ph.D. at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain, where my doctoral research focused on the autonomous and reliable operation of multilayer optical networks. During this period, I developed innovative solutions to enhance transmission quality, optimize network resource allocation, and automate operations. My work earned the prestigious Special Doctoral Award in 2024. Following my Ph.D, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher with the CCABA for nearly three years. My current research interests include autonomous, distributed intelligent network operations across packet and optical layers, incorporating Artificial Intelligence techniques such as Deep Reinforcement Learning. I have co-authored over 25 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences, and I actively serve as a reviewer for international journals and conferences. My experience includes participation in H2020 European research projects such as METRO-HAUL and B5G-OPEN, as well as Spanish Ministry of Science TWINS and IBON projects. I also contributed to SEASON, DESIRE-6G, and ALLEGRO HORIZON European projects, where I engaged in research activities, project management at UPC, and leading communication efforts. Currently, I serve as the Education and Training Officer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center for the CASTIEL2 project, where I lead Work Package 3 (WP3). I hold a Google Project Management Certificate, which has provided me with foundational expertise in Agile methodologies (Scrum), project planning and execution, documentation, and stakeholder management. In addition to my academic and professional endeavors, I am passionate about promoting the role of women in telecommunications. I co-organize workshops alongside international conferences to advocate for diversity and inclusion within the field.
