About Sofie de Caigny

Sofie De Caigny is Head of Collection at the New Institute (Rotterdam) and President of the Commision for the Quality of the Built Environment and Cultural Heritage for the City of Rotterdam. She was appointed director at the Flanders Architecture Institute (2018-24). She served as Secretary General of ICAM – International Confederation of Architectural Museums (2014-22) and is part of the World Heritage Commission of the city of Bruges (Belgium). Sofie was visiting professor in Architecture Criticism at the Faculty of Design Sciences of the University of Antwerp and at the Faculty of Architecture and Art of the University of Hasselt. She publishes widely on contemporary architectural culture in Flanders, with a special focus on the relationship architecture has with the past. She is editor in chief of the Flanders Architectural Review (editions 2018-24) and curated various exhibitions, amongst which ‘Maatwerk. Architecture from Flanders and the Netherlands’ at the German Architecture Museum, Frankfurt (2016). She commissioned ‘Composite Presence’, the entry for the Belgian Pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennial in 2021. Sofie is passionate about the relation between past, present and future of the built environment, and is dedicated to improve the quality of spaces for all. She is convinced that many of the answers for the challenges we face today, could be inspired by a deep dive into the history of the discipline of architecture.
