About Stefan Millson

I am a stress biologist with over 25 years cancer research experience working with biomarkers of cell stress and cancer. I trained in cancer proteomics during my Fellowship at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (Seattle). I then returned to the UK setup the UK’s first high throughput yeast two-hybrid protein interaction screening facility and performed the first proteomic screen for the protein HSP90 that is a major "driver" of cancer. This breakthrough piece of research for the very first me identified primary stress proteins that regulated these key steps in "driving" cancer proliferation. In doing so, revealed a new group of cancer drug targets that could be exploited for future cancer therapies. Around 7 years I started some translational research in my research group re-applying cancer stress marker to stress in animals as cancer is probably the most defined cellular stress (proteomic overloading), I started investigating the use of these new cancer markers being trialled in humans as potential biomarkers for more "normal" stress in animals. I currently collaborate with leading animal behaviour experts to try to solve these some of these problems.
