About Stephanie Fleming

As a formerly incarcerated individual with more than twenty five years in the human service field, my personal experiences within the criminal legal system have profoundly shaped both my professional trajectory and my commitment to social justice. This lived experience informs my empathy and dedication to working with justice-impacted populations. I am particularly sensitive to the intersection of trauma, untreated mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and educational inequities — factors that often converge to perpetuate cycles of incarceration and marginalization. I recognize that systemic barriers within communities not only sustain poverty but also exacerbate psychological distress and social exclusion. I view education as a transformative pathway out of these cycles. By prioritizing access to education and empowerment, we can begin to mitigate the collateral consequences of incarceration and create conditions that support healing, resilience, and reintegration. Within the frameworks of social psychology and criminology, I am particularly interested in how trauma, stigma, and social exclusion shape both self-concept and community reintegration among justice-impacted individuals. My professional background has offered continual exposure to the interdependence of untreated mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and educational inequities—factors that not only contribute to criminalization but also impede post-incarceration adjustment. These observations have led me to pursue research that examines the psychological and social mechanisms underlying resilience, rehabilitation, and systemic reform. I view education as a transformative social force that can interrupt cycles of incarceration and promote psychological empowerment. My goal is to advance research that integrates social psychological theory with criminological inquiry to develop evidence-based interventions that reduce recidivism, foster prosocial identity development, and promote equity within justice-affected communities. Ultimately, to contribute to scholarship and policy that bridges individual transformation with structural change—creating pathways for healing, and inclusion.
