Background
About Stephen Doust
A trained lawyer and an experienced diplomat, I have significant international experience, particularly in Asia, through my work with Global Affairs Canada. I am currently Ambassador of Canada to Mongolia, arriving in August 2025 and taking my position officially in October. Prior to Mongolia, I have had five postings abroad dealing with a wide range of political and economic issues, as well as public affairs matters. Postings include Tokyo (twice), Trinidad & Tobago, Washington, DC (accredited to the Organization of American States) and Guangzhou, China. My work has included analysis and reporting, policy development and implementation, advocacy, budget and personnel management, liaison with foreign and Canadian government and business contacts, media work and liaison, events and visits planning and management, etc. I have also performed work at headquarters related to Canada's international treaty obligations, particularly related to corruption, and developing Government of Canada-wide policy for Latin America and the Caribbean, and have been responsible for Canadian relations with the Caribbean. Until August, 2020 I worked in the Trade Bureau of Global Affairs, responsible for bilateral relations between the Government of Canada and the governments of Canada's provinces and territories. I speak fluent French and Japanese, with a high level of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. I am a lawyer, called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1997, and have worked for a boutique securities law firm in Vancouver, BC performing both litigation and solicitor functions.
