About Stephen Lande

Mr. Lande is currently president and founder of Manchester Trade where he oversees the firm’s casework on trade disputes, negotiations, and agreements. He is one of the most distinguished international trade experts in the United States, and has lectured widely in Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Mr. Lande has been involved in international trade since the 1960s, when he was assigned to the Office of the United State Trade Representative as a senior trade negotiator and later Assistant USTR. In this role Mr. Lande negotiated many bilateral and multilateral trade agreements on behalf of the US Government in Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean. He is viewed by many to be the "Father of the Caribbean Basin Initiative"(CBI) and an early force in creating the North American Free Trade Agreement. More recently, he has been directly involved with U.S. and African governments and businesses in advancing the approval of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). During the years he lectured widely in East Africa on AGOA and AGOA implementation. Other African experience includes developing and presenting WTO tutorials in seven African countries throughout Southern, East and West Africa. In 2002 he acted as Chief Economist/Team Leader for an Africa-wide study on Regional Economic Communities (RECs) under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission on Africa (UNECA).
