About Stephen Mitchell

I have taught for 24 years in rigorous, college preparatory high schools and have developed high-level skill as a Socratic teacher. Possessing deep knowledge where literature, religion, and philosophy intersect, I am adept at putting these three disciplines into conversation with each other in my classroom. I am also a skilled writing teacher, conversant in both classical and contemporary rhetoric. I have developed and taught such courses as College Preparatory and Honors British Literature, College Preparatory and Honors Composition and (World) Literature, AP Language and Composition, and AP Literature and Composition, Honors Literature and Philosophy, and Dual-Enrollment Literature and Philosophy (Cultural History of the West, Covenant College). I have also developed interdisciplinary college courses that integrate literature, philosophy, and theology / religion with composition and rhetoric. For more than 15 years, I have served as chair of an English or Humanities Department. During this time I have become skilled in the development and oversight of curriculum, and adept at collaborating with colleagues by fostering conversations that lead to better teaching. I also work with school administrators in identifying, hiring, and placing good teachers I am an active essayist whose work (aimed at the non-specialist) explores existential questions as they arise in literature and persist in theology and philosophy.
