About Tesfalidet Beyene

I am research fellow at South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), Australia. I completed my PhD degree (Reproductive Medicine) in July 2020 at the School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Newcastle, Australia. I have also completed an undergraduate degree in Nursing and a postgraduate degree in Reproductive and Maternal Health Nursing from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2008 and 2012 respectively. Following completion of my PhD, I worked as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at Hunter Medical Research Institute and University of Newcastle, Australia (July 2020-May 2023), investigating the impact of prolonged landscape fire smoke/bushfire smoke exposure on pregnant and breastfeeding women with and without asthma and adults with severe asthma. From this project, I wrote a policy document on clinical management of asthma during bushfire smoke period. Furthermore, I was a committee member for the development of position statement on landscape fire smoke and asthma management for the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ). I was a writer for the world first, online “Asthma in Pregnancy Toolkit” (asthmapregnancytoolkit.org.au), a resource for clinicians and pregnant women with asthma.My PhD research examined the effect of antenatal care and severe maternal morbidity on neonatal near-miss in south Ethiopia. As part of my PhD, I have published five high-quality papers in high impact (Q1) journals. Furthermore, I have published more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed international journals. I have also presented my research findings at various national and international conferences. I have teaching and research experience. I taught several nursing, midwifery and public health subjects including research methodology and reproductive health. I have been conducting reviews for Thorax, BMC Women’s health, BMC Reproductive Health, BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, PLOS One, BMJ open, European Journal of Contraception and Reproductive Health Care, BMC international journal for equity in health. I am currently an Academic Editor for the journal BMC women's Health and PLOS One. My current research focuses on a treatable traits framework for chronic respiratory disease in rural and regional Aboriginal communities.
