Background
About Tessa Lofthouse
I have worked as an Ontario elementary French immersion teacher at the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board since 2014 and, in 2024, moved to the Waterloo Region District School Board to teach French, Drama, ESL, and Special Education in secondary. In my teaching practice, I focus on social justice, anti-racist pedagogy, integrating subject areas and using the arts to promote social change. I have shared these perspectives with my colleagues at CODE and as President, I now have the honour and responsibility of leading a group of amazing educators to promote arts education in the province of Ontario. I received my BA in French Studies and my BEd in 2014 from Brock University. I was awarded my MEd from York University in 2024 for writing a dissertation about the Ontario French as a Second Language curriculum's discourses of intercultural understanding. I have facilitated workshops for the Hamilton-Wentworth DSB, Peel DSB, the Conseil Scolaire Viamonde, Durham DSB and co-facilitated a 2018 and 2021 ETFO Summer Institute in addition to CODE workshops and webinars. I was honoured with the 2019 laureate of the Concours des Professionels créatifs for the Association Canadienne des professeurs d’Immersion (ACPI).
