About Tharindi Galhena

I have often wondered what it is to be an aquaculturist when I started my bachelor's at University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. No sooner I have realized by my instincts I was going to be better with aquaculture. So along with the studies I have started my own ornamental fish farm, where I have accumulated an immense knowledge beyond books. After completing a bachelor of fisheries and marine sciences and technology in Aquaculture with a second class upper division I secured a position as R&D assistant in January 2016 with Tropical Fish Int.(Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka. I held this position for two years.This role demanded strong problem solving skills and interpersonal skills, and the vital need is to be a good observer as you are dealing with aquatic animals. Part of my role included assisting with other daily activities in the farm such as animal inventory management and labour management. Due to often being the sole coordinator of the research activities, I am able to perform my tasks efficiently and competently with little or no supervision. Two years of this role has allowed me to professionalize my knowledge in ornamental fish farming and drive under strong work ethics. I came to Australia to study my master's in Sustainable aquaculture. This was an absolutely different but wholesome experience in my life and my career as well. Studying aquaculture from Curtin university opened my eye to new techniques, methods, and practices in aquaculture. Moreover, studying about sustainability and ethics in the industry gave a clear insight of practising aquaculture in an environmentally friendly manner. I love applying the knowledge I have in various industrial practices. I love applying the knowledge I have in various industrial practices.
