About Thomas Stewart

I am a Welsh writer based in Edinburgh. I am Head of Content and a senior English teacher at Intrepid English. I have over four years of experience working as an English language teacher. I like working with students who know what they want but are also open to experimenting such as using literature to learn the English language. I am always thinking creatively and I will encourage you to do so. I also have over six years experience working as a freelance editor and writer. In 2021 I was awarded a New Writers Award from Scottish Book Trust where I am currently being mentored by Claire Askew. empire of dirt, my poetry pamphlet, a Poetry Book Society selection, was published by Red Squirrel Press in 2019, which has been stocked in bookshops around the UK. I was highly commended in the Verve 2020 Poetry Competition. I have an MA in Writing from the University of Warwick. I completed my Master’s in Milan where I was mentored by Tim Parks at IULM. I have a BA in English from the University of South Wales where I was tutored by Philip Gross, Catherine Merriman and Tiffany Murray. My work has been featured at Butcher’s Dog, fourteen poems, The Amsterdam Quarterly, And Other Poems, The Glasgow Review of Books, among others. My work has been selected for the following anthologies: Creating in Crisis (Polari Press, 2021), We’ve Done Nothing Wrong, We’ve Nothing to Hide (Verve Poetry Press, 2020) and the Scottish Poetry Library’s Best Scottish Poems 2019. I was a writer in residence at Arteles, Finland. In 2015 I was commissioned by the Pen Museum in Birmingham and my aria was performed at St. Fagan’s Museum in collaboration with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. In 2014 I was selected to write an aria as part of the Tree Carols Project, which was then performed at Warwick Arts Centre. I have worked with Macmillan Charity and ran writing workshops with those suffering with cancer and their families. In 2012 I was a Teacher’s Assistant at Yale University as part of the Summer Institute for the Gifted where I ran writing workshops with teenagers. Formerly Assistant Editor for Men's Fashion Magazine and Deputy Editor for The Student Journals.
