About Tim Leighton

Tim Leighton PhD is Director of Professional Education and Research at Action on Addiction. He has been in the addictions field since 1985 as a counsellor, psychotherapist, researcher, teacher and charity executive. He is a member of the Leadership Team at Action on Addiction. Tim has been a UKCP registered Cognitive Analytic Psychotherapist since 1994 and is also an ACAT accredited trainer and supervisor. He has served on a variety of expert committees convened by the NTA and the ACMD, and was a member of the NICE Psychosocial Interventions for Adult Drug Misusers Guideline Development Group. He designed, co-developed and led the University of Bath Foundation Degree and B.Sc in Addictions Counselling, launched in 2004, and still teaches on these courses. He also designed and taught a Post-Graduate Diploma in Addictions Counselling for King's College London in the 1990s. He is currently developing new clinical trainings for Addictions Counsellors. His current research interests are Addictions Counselling as a social practice, and mechanisms of change in treatment programmes. His PhD thesis was on Mechanisms of Change in Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programmes.
