About Tom Jansen

I strongly believe connected & automated vehicles can improve daily lives, if we manage to implement them properly. With my personal and our company background in autonomous vehicles, my goal is therefore to help our clients implement mature, reliable and safe self-driving transportation systems that truly provide added value. Our work includes specification, procurement, design, testing and certification of all aspects of the complex integrated systems these vehicles require. We help our clients with autonomous vehicle type approval applications and with the risk assessment regarding functional safety needed for the authorities. My personal objective is to explain and incorporate best practices from Systems Engineering and Functional Safety in an easy and practical manner, rather than to add complexity. This way, implementing the necessary measures and striving for the optimum level of reliability, safety etc. becomes natural to a development team or project organization. As a consultant, I have extensive experience in engineering, commissioning and verification of complex, electronic safety systems. I am experienced in the functional safety domain related to transport systems, having a degree in embedded electronics and a professional background as railway signalling engineer and certified independent safety assessor. Due to my practical working experience in the field of automated transport systems, I am well aware of the risks and failures related to the engineering, production, operation and maintenance of automated transport systems. My recent experience includes multiple truck platooning projects (NL, BE, UK), train platooning / virtual coupling studies for clients in Asia and Europe, the WEpods Personal Rapid Transport (NL), the autonomous shuttles on Brussels Airport (BE), Container Exchange Route for Port of Rotterdam (NL) and several speaking tasks at leading conferences and universities. My experience reaches across standards such as: EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, ISO 26262, ISO/PAS 21448 (SOTIF), IEC 61508, ISO 3691-4, TSI CCS.
