About Umut Erdem

I have a Ph.D. in smart regional technological specialization policy. I have experience in course design and research-led teaching in regional economics and GIS science. I participated in an European Research Council project on spatiality and historicity of occupations. I participated in a project by Izmir Development Agency and two projects by TUBITAK. I have developed an important body of publications, presentations, and academic activities. I have authored papers that have been published by respected journals published by a variety of publishers, including Wiley, Springer, and Sage. My research has been published in Review of Urban and Regional Development Studies, Environment and Planning A, Economy and Space, Journal of Geography and Geology, Euro-American Association of Economic Development Studies, Environment, Development and Sustainability, Regional Statistics, Management Research and Practice, and ITU AZ Journal and Journal of Planning.(ii) I spent 6 months at Utrecht University in Holland as a visiting Ph.D. candidate researcher under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ron Boschma between December 2019 and June 2020, with a scholarship from The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. I spend 6 months at TU Wien, in Vienna, Austria as a visiting MA student, supported by a scholarship from the Erasmus Program between December 2013 and June 2014. Thanks to these visits, I have had opportunities to have interactive experiences with different cultures and I attended several European Regional Science Association summer schools in Greece, Italy, and Austria. As a researcher dealing with spatial networks, I know the importance of academic networks and, in this regard, I am a member of LUQAA - Lab of Urban Analytics and Quantitative Analysis and URRN - Urban and Regional Research Network. Besides, I am always very open to co-authorship and project collaborations with local and international researchers. I published a paper with Prof. Ayyoob Sharifi, University of Hiroshima, Japan. In addition, I published 3 papers with Prof. Dimitrios Tsiotas from the Agriculture University of Athens, Greece, and papers with researchers from various universities in Turkey. I can do spatial research at various scales like regions, cities, neighborhoods, and streets. I am equipped with research methods like spatial statistics, big data, machine learning, neural networks, and geographical neural networks, and very advanced in various GIS tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.
