About Wayne Smoak

My retirement on May 30, 2012 ended 30 years in the professional world of the state court systems of NC and SC. My career started as a part-time job in college with the SC Court Administration Data Entry Division. I loved this work and those with whom I worked. I stayed on upon graduation from college, accepting a position as an Information Systems Specialist (fied rep). At the end of my career, I enjoyed doing such things as managing a training facility for NCAOC in Williamston, NC as well as helping teams of professional colleagues succeed at helping our clients in the state courts operate on a day-to-day basis. Over the years at NCAOC, with the rise of computerization, we developed computer systems to help the courts (rolled them out after testing, training, provided maintenance, follow-up, etc.). I also served as an instructor, help desk analyst, business systems analyst, project lead, magistrate team lead supervisor and auditor of clerk of superior court's staff work allocation and recordkeeping. I developed some expertise in the areas of computer application development and testing, criminal and motor vehicle law and procedure, civil procedure and case processing. I was sat on various committees, including forms creation, criminal offense codes, state jail population projection, Criminal Justice Information Network and four-time class schedule coordinator for the annual state-wide Assistant and Deputy Clerk's of Superior Court Conference. My work sometimes included making presentations before large and small audiences. Serving several hundred employees in NC's 100 counties, I had to be well-informed and well-ahead of those I helped. One of the most enjoyable parts of my job was the travel. I visited the courthouses in all 100 NC counties, where, after work, I enjoyed touring the area and sampling the local cuisine. In retirement, I continue to help my wife raise our high school and college-aged teens, as well as tackle my dreams of developing a business.
