Early in my dental career I realized I needed to work on my communication skills by exposing myself to thought leaders in this arena. Ultimately, I became a Certified Maxwell Leadership Coach, Speaker, and Trainer. I have since retired from dentistry but not leadership development. We teach: • Leadership is Influence, nothing more, nothing less - John Maxwell (JM) • There are 21 Laws of Leadership – JM • There are 5 Levels of Leadership - JM As a certified trainer I use the 5 Levels of Leadership, which is a game plan for learning how to grow as a leader. The hardest person to lead is yourself because we all have blind spots. Blind spots are areas of which you are not aware. Hearing and listening are two very different things. We hear with our ears.and listen with our hearts. Leadership is a combination of hearing and listening, at the same time, to better connect with our people. As a Certified Trainer in the 5 Levels of Leadership, I believe that leadership can be taught, and these skills can be coached and developed. Influence grows when you understand the needs of your followers. Those needs are basic human needs. They are not up for debate. Gallup has confirmed these so-called soft skills are measurable and tangible and actually increase employee engagement.
