About Wouter Krokaert

The need to draw made Wouter Krokaert study graphic design. And it was during these studies that he discovered dance, dance as a way to respond to that same need. Dancing, like drawing, allows hem on one hand, to sharpen his own perception, and on the other hand, to share that perception with others. When he makes a pencil drawing he takes a step backwards in order to observe the subject in a better way. When he dances, he takes a step forward in order to place himself as the middle of the subject. For him these are both methods of observation. As time has past, he has integrated more media and disciplines to enrich his practice of drawing. This has led to collaborations with Meg Stuart and Gary Hill, Rachid Ouramdane, Claude Wampler, Emmanuelle Huynh, Yukiko Shinozaki and Heine Avdal, Pieter Ampe, Barbara Mavro Thalassitis, Marc Vanrunxt, Germaine Kruip, Mette Edvardsen and more long term; Christian Rizzo, amongst others. He has made drawings for the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, for the Museum of Fashion and Textile in Paris, or they were shown during expositions in for instance Espace le Carré in Lille, la Maison Grégoire in Brussels, museum M in Louvain, the Lux in Valence or the ICI-CCN in Montpellier. His book Paysage avec Jeanne – in which he confronted his drawings with these of Jeanne Le Peillet – is edited at Frémok. He made the performance Kanttekenigen (drawings in the margins) and for the last several years, he has been teaching at the faculty of architecture of the KU Leuven, on the campus Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent.
