Hi, I’m Arwin, I currently work as a Technical Manager in the Information and Communications Research Laboratories in the Industrial Technology Research Institute. Work takes up most of my time, so I don’t really know how to enjoy my leisure time. I usually like to zone out so I can rest my mind, but I am very meticulous and logical at work so I can ensure that software operates correctly and effectively. In the AI project that I led, I need to constantly think about doctors’ decision-making process and patient behavior in order to develop an AI model that meets the needs of the doctors and patients. The AI Decision Support Technology for Fundus Images that was developed by the team I led was approved by the TFDA in 2021 as a Class II medical device and won the 2022 Edison Awards and 2022 R&D 100 Awards. This medical equipment is a collaboration of the minds of the human brain and artificial intelligence (AI) through the expertise of ophthalmologists and AI analytical technology. It effectively assists non-ophthalmologists in diagnosis of small lesions in the fundus images of patients with diabetes, eliminates the inconvenience of patients’ referrals to ophthalmologists, increases the early detection rate in potential patients, and reduces healthcare expenditures and social costs. The technology accurately detects small-sized lesions through a neural network by our own design and is currently the only Software as Medical Device (SaMD) in the world that automatically detects four fundus lesions
