The Capital Markets Authority (CMA) was set up in 1989 as a statutory agency under the Capital Markets Act Cap 485A. It is charged with the prime responsibility of both regulating and developing an orderly, fair and efficient capital markets in Kenya with the view to promoting market integrity and investor confidence. The regulatory functions of the Authority as provided by the Act and the regulations include; Licensing and supervising all the capital market intermediaries; Ensuring compliance with the legal and regulatory framework by all market participants; Regulating public offers of securities, such as equities and bonds & the issuance of other capital market products such as collective investment schemes; Promoting market development through research on new products and services; Reviewing the legal framework to respond to market dynamics; Promoting investor education and public awareness; and Protecting investors’ interest.

Custody & Registrars C&r Group
C&R Group’s history began in 1986, then operating as Barclays Advisory & Registrars Services (BARS) as an in-house department of the Barclays Bank of Kenya, to offer share registry services to the banks’ shareholders, after its listing in Nairobi Securities Exchange the same year. In 1991, BARS was incorporated to offer similar services commercially to other listed companies and grew to become the largest Shares Registrar in Kenya. During a business review in 2006, the bank decided to dispose off some of its non-core businesses and BARS was sold as an on-going concern. The company was renamed C&R Group and remains the market leader in shares registrar’s services, enjoying a market share of 34% of all listed companies trading at the Nairobi Stock Exchange. Collection Africa Limited (CAL) is a debt management outsourcing service, which is designed to provide our clients with a bad debt resolution tool. CAL began its debt management outsource services to banking institutions n 2001 when established as the specialist debt collection organization within the CRBAfrica group purposefully to deliver debt portfolio management services to banks on their retail debts. Retail debt is characterized by high volume and relatively low value per debt. This renders the collection of retail debt expensive and ineffective when traditional and conventional debt collection techniques are applied. CAL was set up to provide banks with an outsource partner who would take up the costs and efforts to pursue, track, negotiate, and monitor the repayment of retail debt. CAL has since establishment in 2001 provided the banking sector with a highly effective non-performing asset resolution tool. Our experience in the banking sector has been mirrored in other sectors as well with an equal measure of success. CAL administers the collection of debt (from pr-determined age) for its clients using our proprietary Debt Management Software System, Recover! That tracks and monitors each and every debt to its final resolution.
