Amkeni Malindi
AMKENI began as a support group in the year 2009 for men who have sex with men in Malindi, Kilifi County. In 2010, the group collaborated with KEMRI that provided a conducive environment for members meeting in a safe space. This time, she grew tremendously in numbers and in the access to comprehensive services where she used the peer education model to create, reach and push for the human rights agenda to address the issues affecting LGBT Members in Kilifi County. This was culminated by a collaboration with Red Cross, Kenya to establish a DICE and UHAI in the development of a strategic plan, 2018 – 2020, and a pool of partners in the continued support for her work. AMKENI’s programmatic environment is constantly changing and is characterized by an evolving policy and political environment, shifting donor commitments, growing stakeholder numbers and expectations, evolving staffing structure and capacity, amongst other factors. The organization currently has an office space that serves as her DICE, a new Board that facilitates steering her forward and who shall be key in ensuring that there is value for money of her programs, and that the institution is effective and efficient and can align her work to the contribution of change in the community as espoused by this strategic plan. AMKENI has grown in leaps and bounds from a lean staff in 2009 to the current, who are in charge of ensuring that her services and programs are well facilitated and delivered to. Whilst the office is located in Kilifi county, the organization reach and influence has spread all over the coastal strip with national programs, achieved especially through research and partnerships with the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (GALCK) and her affiliates, intersectional HIV programs with the National Aids Control Counsel (NACC) and the National Aids Control Program (NASCOP) including with her county chapters, amongst others.

Destiny Shapers Foundation
Destiny Shapers Foundation was started in 2014 with the vision of impacting the Korogocho Community, a fast growing slum in Nairobi, Kenya. The Community based organization as of then started with recruiting 23 children who had got to the age to go to school but had not yet been enrolled. The criterion for recruitment was and has been the most vulnerable children in the society. These include orphans, children whose parent (s) has been imprisoned, children who have faced gender based violence including sexual abuse, others come from poor families that cannot be able to foot school fees for them. The Organization grew up to 280 pupils enrolled in the education center as of January 2023 with 20 members of staff working full time and on site. In 2022, we were registered as a foundation with the hope to reach far and wide for the development of orphans and vulnerable children and families. At the center, we not only offer basic education but also food; lunch and breakfast while some of the most vulnerable carry cooked food home. We are a not for profit organization where we invite corporates and individuals donors to support this project either by financial aid or giving in kind. Page Turners Kenya
Books empower kids by opening up new possibilities for them. A child reads Gifted Hands by Ben Carson, and it gives them the desire to be a neurosurgeon. If Ben Carson could move from poor academic performance to a decorated career in one of the most mentally-demanding fields, so can this child. Kids in areas like slums need this exposure the most, but unfortunately, their access to books is often limited. At Page Turners, we're working to change that. Our flagship project is at the Shining Star Centre in Dagoretti. Since 2021, we have sourced for books, turned a small room in the school into a library and rolled out a weekly mentorship program at the school. To help the children make the most of these books, we volunteered with them once a week for six months. Every week, we read and reviewed a book with them. We aimed to help them enhance their comprehension and analytical skills. But we also engaged them in activities based on the books, such as debates and mind-mapping, to boost their confidence, public speaking skills etc. Volunteers at Page Turners are chiefly young professionals and university students. So, in our sessions, we shared experiences from our work and school life in a bid to inspire the kids and empower them further. One of our volunteers, a mechatronics engineer, even introduced the kids to robotics by building a robotic arm for them and explaining how it works. While we'll be taking on a new school in 2023, we'll also be working with Shining Stars to maintain a functional library system and ensure the kids keep soaking up knowledge and exposure from books. For us to keep doing this, we need volunteers and donors. If you're young and love working with kids, we'd love to have you. Watch out for when we next advertise for volunteers, which is around April. If you can donate books, board games, or funds, they'll make a true difference for the kids. Reach out to Dommy Odhiambo through pageturnerske@gmail.com
