MERCHAVIM was established by its former director, Mike Prashker, in 1998 as an Israeli non-governmental organization (NGO) to create a fairer society for all Israeli citizens through shared citizenship education. Development of the Model by the "MERCHAVIM Group" The new Director is Esti Halperin who previously devoted over a decade to creating the educational content at Merchavim. The shared citizenship model and the spaces of shared citizenship teaching kit, which is central to MERCHAVIM programming, were originally developed by a diverse group of Israeli teachers from all 4 school streams: Jewish secular, Jewish-religious, Ultra-Orthodox and Arab-Israeli. This group represents a microcosmos of Israeli society: men and women, Jews and Arabs, secular and religious, center and periphery, left and right, new immigrants and veterans, physically healthy and handicapped. The group worked hard to overcome deep disagreements and to create a consensual shared citizenship vision based on shared values and common interests. Each member of the group was given the time, place and space to express verbally and in writing his or her feelings of "personal" and "group" identity. Over a period of 18 months, beginning in the group's efforts focused on learning about each other, understanding each others’ distinct and shared ideas relating to their Israeli citizenship and agreeing the basic building-blocks of MERCHAVIM’s unique shared citizenship education approach. The unique program development process and the innovative and widely consensual shared citizenship education approach that it generated were to a large extent made possible through the uniquely diverse make-up of the original program development team.

Amal is Israel’s pioneering State-Democratic educational network, founded in 1928 by the Histadrut, Israel's labor federation. It unites 50 diverse schools (Jewish, Arab, Druze, Bedouin) across 21 local authorities with an annual Enrollment of students and with a staff of members. Amal has a scientific-technological focus with 31 Multidisciplinary Schools, 19 Technological Schools, 16 Colleges for Technicians and Practical Engineers, 14 Adult Education Colleges that provide vocational training for Adults, and 7 Youth Entrepreneurship Centers. Amal's vision is to nurture informed citizens with a strong sense of identity, civic values and both adaptive and leadership skills to get by in a shared society. In terms of civic Education, Amal would like to instill democratic values, critical thinking and social justice as well to encourage community engagement by volunteerism and resilience-building projects. My role is to encourage donations from philanthropic foundations and individuals, in Israel and from overseas, as well as from the business community, as education is key to securing our future here.

Hamahanot Haolim המחנות העולים
המחנות העולים הוקמה בשנת 1926 בתל אביב והייתה לתנועת הנוער הלומד הראשונה שיוסדה בארץ ישראל. מייסדי התנועה היו מספר נערים ונערות, בכיתה יא' מהגימנסיה העברית הרצליה בת"א, אשר חשו בריקנות חיי העיר. הם חיפשו אחר דרך חדשה לעשייה חברתית, לחלוציות ולהגשמת ערכי הציונות בארץ ישראל ("הציונות של העושים"). קבוצה זו של מקימי התנועה נקראה לימים 'החוג הזקן' ותאריך הקמת התנועה נקבע לכ"ה בתשרי תרפ"ז, התאריך שבו יצאה "קבוצת החוגים" להגשמה בחדרה. התנועה פועלת בכ -45 מחנות (סניפים). ביניהם מחנות חדשים רבים שהוקמו בעשור האחרון בפריפריה הגאוגרפית והחברתית של ישראל (במקומות כמו נצרת עלית, מגדל העמק, אילת ועוד). בכל שנותיה של התנועה, חניכיה רואים עצמם כמי שמחויבים לבנייתה של חברת מופת ולכן העמידו עצמם בצמתים החשובים של הציונות ומדינת ישראל. זאת למשל בהתיישבות (הקמה והשלמה של 42 קיבוצים בעיקר בגבולותיה של הארץ.), בביטחון (עמידה על גיוס נוער לומד לפלמ"ח וגיוס ההכשרה הראשונה מקרב הנוער הלומד, גיוס קרבי של נשים לצבא.), ובשנים האחרונות בעיקר בלקיחת אחריות על חינוך הנוער ושינוי פני החברה בכלים חינוכיים. לאורך ההיסטוריה הציונית מימי היישוב ועד ימינו בוחרים חניכי ומדריכי המחנות העולים להוביל את חינוך הנוער ולעודדו לעשייה חלוצית ולהעמיס על כתפיו את האחריות על בנייתה של החברה הישראלית.
