Westville Boys' High School Foundation
WBHS is a world-class South African institution that prepares its students for a rapidly changing global environment and has developed an enviable reputation for achieving all-round excellence in the education of its students. While for most of its sixty year history it has been regarded as the premier academic school for boys in KwaZulu-Natal, over the past two decades in particular, it has expanded and developed its programmes to become an institution that is excellent across all facets of school life – the four pillars of Academics, Arts, Sport and Leadership. This consistent level of achievement has received both national and international recognition. The facilities of WBHS were developed in its initial period of existence by the State. These have been enhanced over the last ten to fifteen years by the generous support of parents and benefactors. In line with government policy of correcting the inequalities in the South African education system, the State has, since 1997, significantly reduced its funding of the School. We are regarded as a ‘quintile 5 advantaged school’, and consequently State funding is limited to approximately 30% of our operational budget. Parents and guardians of students at the School contribute approximately 68% of the funds required through school fees, while a further 1.5% of funds are obtained from other sources. This funding does not allow for large-scale campus development. As such, for any new developments and supplementary programmes not covered in the School’s budget to be fulfilled, the School needs to source funds through other avenues. In order for us to uphold our position as a world- class South African school, several new and exciting capital developments need to be initiated. All planned developments, including the purchase and development of a new boarding establishment, the refurbishing of science laboratories, the upgrading of change rooms, and the construction of a student centre and drama teaching facility, are designed to support the pillars of excellence of the School. The Foundation has been established as a fundraising vehicle to support the School in strengthening its position as a premier school. In so doing, the Foundation will directly support the all-round education experience of the current students of the School, and the thousands of boys who will attend the School in the future. The Foundation is a separate legal entity to the School and is registered as a non-profit company in terms of Section 21 of the Companies Act. In addition, it enjoys Public-Benefit Organisation (PBO) status. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors. Individuals who make donations over a certain threshold become voting members of the Foundation. The initial fund-raising target of the Foundation is R10 million.

African School For Excellence
African School for Excellence (ASE) is rooted in a unique concept: create a self-sustaining network of elite independent secondary schools that anyone can afford. ASE focuses on 2 specific pain-points of the African education system: the quality of education provided and the cost of providing high-quality education. The ASE Model leverages peer learning and technology, while taking into account the fact that any successful model must also be scalable. Without solving both of these problems simultaneously, a good education will only be available to a fraction of the population and limit the potential of talented individuals who can transform their communities. To do this, we focus on 3 essential factors: 1. World-Class Quality. Everything begins with our commitment to excellence. We know that township scholars can compete with the world’s best students. We expect ASE scholars to graduate ready to succeed at the very best universities, both in South Africa and abroad, and we accept nothing less. Affordable Sustainability. We understand that even the highest-quality educational model will not be enough to change the state of education in South African townships. ASE's refined model costs roughly 60% of current government education spending per learner, which extends the capabilities of the government to improve the state of education in South Africa. Scalability. South Africa is filled with talented young people who can achieve world-class results if given the opportunity. Through our financial model, our systems, and our embedded teacher’s college, we maintain a ceaseless focus on scale. We seek to develop a network of 200 schools throughout the country, providing elite education to tens of thousands of disadvantaged scholars every year. African School for Excellence, Inc. is a registered Public Benefit Organization in South Africa (PBO reference number 930040741) and a registered 501(c)(3) U.S. organization (Federal Tax ID 27-4892867).

Mellon Educate Sa
Improving education, the Mellon Way Mellon Housing Initiative was started in 2002 by philanthropist and accomplished entrepreneur Niall Mellon. While on holiday in South Africa with his family he passed an informal settlement where people had no running water or electricity and this was his driving force to make a difference. In conjunction with the South African Government Mellon Housing Initiative built sustainable houses for 125 people. This was supported by 25 selfless volunteers and altruists within Corporate South Africa. Today these houses still stand where informal settlements used to be, furnished with solar geysers and electricity and remain a blue print for the Government on which to base their designs for the future. Niall had the privilege of meeting and spending time with Nelson Mandela. It was a conversation with him that inspired a new vision for Mellon Educate. Mellon Educate has pledged a 10-year education development programme to provide better education to more than young children. Improving education, the Mellon way, means ensuring children have a solid roof over their heads and teachers are equipped to deliver the curriculum efficiently. We partner with struggling schools in South Africa that are operating under very challenging circumstances. These schools have insuficient classrooms and facilities, and may lack electricity, running water and adequate sanitation. One of our first tasks is to replace these structures with stable and safe buildings to the Mellon Educate standard. The next task is providing schools with innovative management and teaching methodologies, support and resources to empower staff to deliver a first-class education to all children. Through the Memorandum of Agreement with the Western Cape Education Department we are held accountable to improve results within the schools that we operate.
