The Royal Countryside Fund
We’re The Royal Countryside Fund – the UK-wide charity working alongside farming families and rural communities to provide the support and funding they need to thrive. Right now, hardworking family farms and rural communities face social, environmental and economic pressures that threaten the livelihoods they love. They shouldn’t have to face these alone and with us, they don’t have to. That’s why HM King Charles founded The Royal Countryside Fund back in 2010 – to recognise the real challenges that come with rural life and do something about it. Over the last decade, we have invested more than £12.7 million to in over 556 projects working across the UK. We’ve supported over farming families through our resilience programmes, and through our Farm Support Groups Initiative, helped countless others to access local support when it’s needed most. Whirlow Hall Farm Trust
Whirlow Hall Farm Trust is an education and environmental charity based on a working upland farm on the outskirts of Sheffield. It exists to nurture, inspire and expand horizons for children and young people. Farming, horticulture and the countryside are used to enhance and underpin existing educational and vocational provision, or to re-engage those who have been excluded from mainstream education. Whirlow provides a place for children and young people who experience complex and debilitating anxieties. They are suffering due to living in challenging circumstances and struggling to cope with one or several additional learning needs. This, along with trying to navigate hectic school environments with their many social and academic pressures leads to disengagement in education, negative behaviours and lack of relationships with both adults and peers. The children and young people we support are facing a complex combination of difficulties, including medical and mental health conditions, learning needs and disabilities, and heart-breaking personal circumstances. Whether our students are living with cancer, anxiety, autism or ADHD; overcoming neglect or coping with bereavement, our unique farm provides a safe, nurturing environment that equips them with the tools to learn, grow in confidence, build self-esteem and resilience. The immediate impact our unique setting has on our students’ well being cannot be overstated. Our tranquil setting provides an immediate relief to their daily, intolerable sensory overload. Our aim is to support them to re-engage with education which could be returning to their school and being more engaged, moving on to a new school, starting at a special school or gaining qualifications to move onto further education.

Bristol Fungarium
Our mission is to cultivate, process and provide the best medicinal mushroom products available here in the UK - with the least negative impact on our local environment, while inspiring and educating people about the history, science and healing opportunities of the mushrooms we grow and love. We strive to do things differently by offering native strains, organically grown, comprehensively extracted, and packed under a single roof. We want to be the first to not only make the whole supply chain short and transparent - but potentially the only company who knows exactly where our mushroom's originated in the wild! We do this by carefully foraging for interesting species, bringing them back to our lab at the farm, and cloning them on plates of agar before fruiting them on myceliated blocks we create with sustainably sourced sawdust and organic wheat bran. By prioritising strains that are native to the land we live on, we are avoiding the spread of hundreds of billions of spores from commercial mushroom strains that have been selected specifically for their ability to grow fast and fruit heavily, and will therefore easily outcompete a lot of the mushroom strains we are so lucky to have around the farm. Furthermore - it turns out after recent tests that our native strains have a much higher content of betaglucans, over 36% higher in fact than the commercial strains we tested! Our ultimate goal is to give back to the land we're so lucky to be based on, by utilising the “spent” (leftover) substrate from our mushroom blocks to spearhead mycoremediation projects in our local community, as well as "re-mushrooming" woodlands across the South West with native strains (- which has already begun). Bristol Fungarium is a developing story, and this is only the beginning.
