LDWDA was established to respond to the pressing need for greater gender equity, social inclusion, and economic opportunity for women in the region. Wankunda Banana Plantation Limited was incorporated on 23rd December 2009. The founders had seen the potential for banana growing because of the favourable climate in Northern Province as well as abundant water and rich soils. Furthermore, the market for bananas was quite promising. The farm is situated 5km off the Kasama/Mporokoso Road, right opposite Kasenga Primary School. The plantation was started with a two hectare of bananas in 2010. This has now expanded to ten hectares with eight in full production. Our customer base is mostly women that buy in bulk and resell at markets and other places. We also supply to specific customers at work places and also to schools and colleges.
