Our furniture is predominantly made from elm, beech ash and oak. ercol works equally enthusiastically with the craftsmen in our partners in manufacturing companies spread across the world from Europe to the Far East. They all contribute to the depth and breadth of ercol furniture. ercol sells through a network of prestige retailers throughout the UK and around the globe for the domestic furniture market. We also provide furniture for the contract market. Caring for the environment comes naturally to ercol, with our energy efficient factory with its biomass boiler fuelled by our wood waste, our avoidance of solvent based finishes, in favour of more environmentally friendly water based finishes, and of course in the use of timber from naturally regenerative forests in Europe and America to make our furniture.

We're champions of serious quality and good old-fashioned craftsmanship. And we only make stuff that we'd enjoy in our own homes. preferably with a cup of tea and a great big slice of chocolate cake! Our story Having lost a whole Saturday trying to buy a bed, Charlie Marshall decided to make the process as quick and hassle free as possible. So two years, 187 mattress factories and some seriously comfy beds later, we were born in December 2008. It turned out there were a lot of you out there who liked what we were doing and we have since become one of the fastest-growing companies in the UK. In 2012 we added sofas to our repertoire. And these went down a storm too. So we continued our quest for world domination as emperors of comfy, laid-back furniture and squishy stuff for the whole home. And that's us in a nutshell! In October 2015 Loaf opened their first showroom. The 'Loaf Shack' is based in London's Battersea and aims to become the most laid-back showroom in Britain. Their second space in London's Notting Hill opened in July 2016. With the most laid-back Shacks in Blighty (they’re slowrooms not showrooms!), we opened our first Loafer's paradise in London's Battersea in October 2015, followed by Notting Hill in 2016 and Spitalfields in 2017.

Alstons
The Alstons family were in the furniture trade for 150 years and were very proud of their heritage. Back in 1860, two brothers, William and Ambrose Alston, opened a furniture shop in Sudbury’s North Street instead of following the family line into the weaving trade. Master cabinet-makers by trade, the brothers’ shop quickly prospered, with loyal customers spreading the word about the brothers’ charming, well-made cabinets. Towards the end of the century they were able to move to Sudbury’s bustling Old Market Place, where they opened up a larger shop with cabinet and upholstery making workshops located behind. In 1950 Leslie decided to establish an upholstery manufacturing business on the back of success he had had with upholstery in their original Old Market Place workshop in Sudbury. The factory moved three times within Colchester before settling in Gosbecks Road. Over the next three decades the business expanded under Alan’s leadership. During that period it established itself as a major producer of well-engineered upholstery. The business grew steadily and by 1980 it was occupying a number of satellite factories in addition to its Colchester base which was run by the fifth generation of Alston brothers, John and David Alston. Today the business continues to thrive under the same values and ethos that the Alstons family created. Their values are still the same as they always were: excellent quality, British-made products and steadfastly impeccable service.
