Grameen Kalyan, established in 1996 as a pioneering social business, Grameen Kalyan is a sister concern of the Grameen family founded by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. Its mission is to deliver affordable, quality healthcare to underserved rural communities across Bangladesh. The journey began with the Rural Health Program (RHP) in 1993, which evolved into a full-fledged social enterprise—Grameen Kalyan (“Kalyan” means well-being)—addressing the link between poverty and poor health. Under the leadership of Managing Director AKM Moinuddin Chowdhury, Grameen Kalyan has become one of Bangladesh’s largest primary healthcare providers. Today, it operates 143 Community-Based Health Centers across 31 districts, directly serving patients annually, while outreach programs benefit over 7 million people at a nominal cost. Services include doctor consultations, diagnostics, ultrasound, vaccinations, pharmacy, telemedicine, outreach health camps, domiciliary care, cataract eye surgery, and Micro Health Insurance (MHI)—its cornerstone model that makes healthcare financially accessible. A state-of-the-art diagnostic lab provides advanced tests for thyroid disorders, cardiac markers, infections, diabetes, reproductive health, and more. Each year, Grameen Kalyan conducts pathology tests, ultrasound scans, 25,700 vaccinations, telemedicine consultations, and issues 77,500 MHI cards. Over school students also receive free check-ups. Future plans include cervical and breast cancer screening, new secondary care hospitals, upgraded labs, expanded eye care, and the long-term establishment of a nursing and medical college in Chattogram. | contact@grameenkalyan.com

Hospital Social Services Programme, Somch
Among the various welfare activities conducted under the auspices of the Department of Social Services, ‘Hospital Social Service Programme’ is one of the most important daily activities. Directly involved in the service of the poor, the downtrodden, the helpless and the afflicted. Hospital social service activities help the poor, helpless patients in various mental, family, social, economic and illness issues to increase the mental strength of the patient, bear the cost of treatment, provide various information to the doctor about the patient's disease and cause and help in rehabilitation after treatment. In Bangladesh, for the first time in 1958, 2 (two) medical social workers were appointed in Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the initiative of the then East Pakistan National Council of Social Welfare. After the establishment of the Directorate of Social Welfare in 1961, the project was expanded to Chittagong and Rajshahi Medical College Hospitals, Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital in Dhaka and Chest Disease Hospital. Thus a total of 38 medical social workers were appointed. Then during the third five year plan 12 units were introduced in 12 hospitals of the country and later in 1991, 2 units in Dhaka metropolis, 1 in Khulna city and 33 units in new district headquarters total 36 were introduced in the development sector. As the activities were fruitful, units were started in 8 more hospitals in 1994. At present, the program is being conducted in a total of 105 units in district level government and private hospitals in 64 districts including Dhaka metropolis and in 420 upazila health complexes at upazila level, the total number of which is 525. In order to implement this program, every hospital under the Department of Social Services has a Rogi Kalyan Samiti (Patients Welfare Association) registered under the Voluntary Social Welfare Organizations (Registration and Control) Ordinance, 1961.
