Ballet Lubbock Inc
Founded in 1969 by Suzanne Aker, Ballet Lubbock is a private, nonprofit organization that strives to be an integral component of Lubbock’s cultural fabric. The Mission of Ballet Lubbock is to changes lives. As a pre-professional dance school, we enchance our community through premier dance training, performances and outreach. We envision an inclusive community transformed by art, embracing dance as an enriching and integral part of life. At the heart of Ballet Lubbock’s mission and guiding principles is the School, which operates from September through May. Our classical ballet curriculum and stirring performances featuring both local and world-renowned artists are parallel to none in our region. Each December the Ballet presents The Nutcracker, a beloved and popular holiday production that attracts audiences of all ages. Each April, a Spring Performance takes place, and features either works of mixed repertoire or standard ballet repertoire. Therefore, we aggressively seek to make our programs known and available to all citizens of the South Plains. Our free and subsidized dance classes at various community centers, and the over of scholarships granted each year break down financial barriers. We host classes for students battling autism since art has a profound impact on us all. The donation of over 3,500 performance tickets including special performances for LISD and area schools each year ensures dance excites all walks of life. We work every day to be a relevant and integral part of the greater Lubbock area’s cultural community. When students train at our school, they not only learn the technique of dance, but they are educated in the values of creativity, discipline, focus, and commitment. Thus, our greatest successes occur off the stage. We measure our success not only by the number or students that walk through our door, but by the diversity of our student population, and the number of collaborations and relationships we can sustain. We want to bring the power of art to all citizens of the South Plains.

Ballet Nepantla
Ballet Nepantla originated from a series of pláticas between founders Andrea Guajardo and Martín Rodríguez, two artists whose early professional identities emerged from distinct genres: Andrea from classical ballet and contemporary dance, and Martin from traditional Mexican folklórico. They envisioned a new form of expression that fused the two modalities, and they envisioned an aesthetic that would speak to the historical, cultural, and social realities of a broader narrative of being Mexican, Mexican American, immigrant, and trans-cultural. Drawing inspiration from Gloria Anzaldúa’s borderlands theory, Andrea and Martín imagined they could create performances that spoke to the “in-between” qualities of being from both sides of the borderland. They found the idea of Nepantla, a Nahuatl term of the indigenous people of Mexico. Nepantla provides a historical, intellectual, and artistic framework through which to explore the “in-between” spaces of history and culture by exploring new artistic expression that fuses different traditions on stage. Thus, Ballet Nepantla was born in January 2017. To launch the work, Andrea and Martín recruited dancers who came from both worlds: contemporary and folklórico. They choreographed original pieces and spent the following months building their inaugural show, “Sin Fronteras.” They forged an artistic partnership with Felipe Fournier, a Latin Grammy-winning musician who found inspiration in the Nepantla vision. Felipe recruited an ensemble of talented musicians and arranged traditional music that aligned with the spirit and vibe of Ballet Nepantla. Since then, Ballet Nepantla has produced three shows touring internationally with critical acclaim from media and academic institutions charting a path for all living in those in-between spaces.

Ballet Petite
Ballet Petite is the first premiere dance education program exclusively for the young child. The specialized curriculum was developed by Nancy Parenti in 1992. Along with the technical leveling of each class, she developed the “storydance”. Each day is a magical door opening to an enchanted realm where stories are enacted and the wonders of all of the arts shine in the light of imagination. Ballet Petite is an intermediate step between natural movement and formal classical ballet training. The children learn to move from creative movement to pre-primary ballet. The educational value is to introduce dance, artistically, to young children. The artistry of Ballet Petite speaks to the heart of children. We teach ballet, hip hop, musical theater, tap and pointe to children 18 months through 14 years in the DC, MD and VA areas. We incorporate dance choreography, classical children’s literature, music compositions and beautiful costumes. Our programs include classes in Ballet, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, Tap and Pointe, camps for Half-Days (Morning or Afternoon) or Full-Days, Petite Parties and after-school Enrichments.
