Vitalite Zambia
VITALITE is a commercial social enterprise based in Lusaka that is focused on having a positive impact both on the communities it serves as well as on the global environment. As a leading distributor of renewable energy in Zambia, VITALITE's goal is for every household to have access to reliable and affordable modern energy. Founded by Dr. John Fay and Dr. Sam Bell in 2013, VITALITE operates throughout Lusaka as well as in Eastern Province and Southern Province. With an estimated electrification rate of 18.8%, with 44% of the urban population and only 3% of the rural population having access to electricity, VITALITE was established to offer needed alternatives to Zambia. VITALITE is the first in Zambia to offer a solution in the form of a pay-as-you-go enabled solar home system - the VITALITE PAYGO Solar Home System. This system offers access to modern energy with lighting, phone charging, and a radio, and reduces depency on unreliable energy sources. VITALITE also offers cooking solutions through a range of gasifying cookstoves, which use biomass fuel to create a clean and efficient flame. Switching from charcoal to biomass helps to reduce the environmental and health implications caused by the extensive use of charcoal. Through expanding its network of local agents and resellers, and partnering with a number of organisations, VITALITE is expanding its reach to more rural areas to provide reliable, affordable and modern energy to those who cannot afford the high up-front costs associated with reliable solar products.

Open Energy Labs
Recent research has shown that the electrification of Africa is being held back by a lack of localised technical capacity to build and maintain renewable energy systems. But students can’t learn about electricity if they don’t have access to it. Therefore, educational institutions in Africa are forced to focus on theoretical learning, as they lack the resources to teach science effectively. Open Energy Labs is developing an educational app and connected hardware kit which takes a “learn by making” approach to teaching students electronics, by building a renewable electricity supply, able to provide reliable power for lighting and mobile-phone charging.

Kuseni Energy Limited
Kuseni Energy provide & distribute affordable off-grid solar energy solutions mainly aimed at the bottom of the pyramid (‘BOP’) communities in Zambia & Southern Africa. Kuseni aims to deliver “radical affordability” across three axes: initial purchase price; total cost of ownership; & flexibility of expenditures over time. A census conducted in 2010 found the total population of Zambia to be 13,046,508, consisting of 2,635,590 households. According to the Energy Regulation Board of Zambia (‘ERB’) 2013-14 Statistics Bulletin there are 568,699 households and 42,603 commercial and small scale users consuming electricity from the grid. Combined data from two complimentary surveys, the Zambia Business Survey (‘ZBS,2008’) and the World Bank Enterprise Survey (‘WBES,2008’) database, shows that there are about 1.02 million informal micro and small enterprises (‘MSMEs’) in Zambia, along with about formal MSMEs. The data also shows that vast majority of these “businesses” are very small with only 15% of them earning revenues greater than US$200 per month; less than 8% have revenues more than US$400 per month. Clearly the data above shows that circa 2million households and 1million MSMEs do not consume electricity from the grid. International charity Solar Aid’s primary research (2012-15) on Zambia, found that BOP families were spending an average US$75 per year on lighting, equivalent to 9% of household income for 4 hours of light at night. An article published in the Lusaka Times on 27th January 2016 estimates that there are 10.9 million mobile phone subscribers in Zambia who clearly require a source of power to charge their phones. This presents a significant opportunity for Kuseni to connect most Zambian households and MSME’s to a radically affordable, reliable and renewable source of electricity.

Standard Microgrid
Standard Microgrid is reimagining the African energy utility by providing clean, modern and affordable energy services to customers when they need it, for those appliances they value most. Our model is based on the premise that rural energy buyers are not concerned with buying energy as such (e.g. kWh’s), but rather with the benefits that energy provides (e.g. charged mobile phones). Based on this premise we sell services instead of energy, which allows us to optimize grid utilization, reinforce energy efficiency practices, and effectively turn a rural community into a collection of hyper-efficient smart homes. The single most important ingredient for success in the microgrid industry is scalability; every aspect of the Standard Microgrid business model from the remote grid management software to the standardized design has been designed and built with the intention to scale. Our business model does not require customers to have mobile money, and is replicable across markets.

Yaaka Investments Limited
The Yaaka portable bin incinerator gives a solution in two areas; safe and clean environment by proper disposal, handling and reduction of waste while taking into account the environmental impact the design has. We are trying to solve the problem of open air burning so as to reduce flue gas emission in the atmosphere (SDG 13). According to the air quality tests which were conducted, it showed that we were within the allowed ZEMA standards and has thus applied for air emissions license. Elsewhere, our project also covers sustainable method of collection of recyclable paper and plastic waste. As at now about 500kg of paper and plastic has been processed and sold to recycling companies. Further the innovation has solved the inefficient access to refuse collection and disposal was It is estimated that only about 7% had initially access to such while reducing waste to about 70% of its mass. Paying attention to the current solutions that council and Zambia Environmental Management Agency has been put in place, well; they are good for a short period of time but not sustainable in the long run. Take for instance the widely used method of collection of waste and disposal of it at dumpsites is good shortly but has harmful adverse effects like air pollution, land pollution and water pollution with which collection of waste and disposal in landfills comes with. Worse still landfills cause water borne diseases like cholera and dysentery, which is the case even in places where collection isn't very effective like chisokone market in Kitwe. Moreover, these are just non-hazardous waste which gives trouble for local authorities to handle and some private waste management companies. Hazardous waste has worst effects currently in our country from industries that produce them like mines and Hospitals. This is so because the amount of flue gases released into the atmosphere is way far from the ZEMA STANDARDS. As a result, we are causing these problems from industrial failures and house
