The Centre for Population, Family and Health is a research centre that carries out fundamental and policy supporting research in social demography and sociology of family, well-being and health. Research of the centre aims to contribute to the understanding of family dynamics through the life course with special attention to health, employment, intergenerational solidarity and the impact of policy. The core themes are family formation and dissolution, the combination of work and family and the socialization of care. The centre uses advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods and works with different data sources ranging from large scale European surveys to administrative data to in-depth interviews. The Centre for Population, Family and Health is specialized in survey methodology, event history analysis and grounded theory methodology. The centre collects, for example, the Flemish SHARE data and is involved with the Generations & Gender Programme.

Physical Chemistry And Polymer Science
The Physical Chemistry and Polymer Science (FYSC) research group is part of the Materials and Chemistry (MACH) department of the Faculty of Engineering of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and conducts both fundamental and applied research in the field of materials sciences. FYSC’s polymer research activities are focused on gaining insight in the molecular and supramolecular structure-processing-property relations in synthetic, bio-based, and natural polymers for developing sustainable materials with improved performance. A comprehensive collection of physicochemical analytical techniques and characterization procedures is available for this purpose, centred around advanced thermal analysis instrumentation. FYSC is at the forefront of the development of new thermal analysis methods to study polymer-based materials, often using prototype or in-house developed instrumentation. Through its characterization expertise, FYSC is involved in the design of novel macromolecular materials, either combined with in-house polymer synthesis or in collaboration with academic and industrial partners, for applications in advanced polymeric systems, coatings, composites, pharmaceuticals, automotive, offshore… The FYSC group uniquely excels in studying and understanding the relation between the structure formation and the resulting properties of the studied materials, and the effect of processing of these materials on the formed structure and properties. Le service de Psychologie Cognitive et Neuropsychologie de l'UMONS, dirigé par le Prof. Laurent Lefebvre, est spécialisé dans l’évaluation et la prise en charge des troubles neuropsychologiques et psychopathologiques chez les patients cérébrolésés ou atteints de pathologies neurodégénératives et/ou psychiatriques. Cette évaluation repose sur la réalisation de bilans neuropsychologiques et sur l’examen des difficultés émotionnelles et comportementales des patients. Dans ce cadre, le service travaille au développement d’outils psychométriques et à l’élaboration d’outils neurodiagnostiques adaptés à des populations particulières.

The Vesalius Research Center (VRC) has focused since 15 years its research interests on unraveling the molecular basis of angiogenesis (i.e. the formation of blood vessels) and translating these genetic insights in therapeutic concepts – with the ultimate aspiration to develop novel treatments. Therefore, the VRC uses interdisciplinary functional genomic and genetic research strategies, from the bench to the bedside, and back again. Clinical cancer trials with antibodies against PlGF, a disease-specific angiogenic factor with unmatched safety profile, will start before the end of 2007 in the K.U.Leuven University Hospital.

The Alianza 4 Universidades (4 Universities Alliance, A4U) is a strategic partnership between four leading Spanish public universities: the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and the Carlos University of Madrid (UC3M). The A4U’s objectives include promoting the research conducted at the partner universities, primarily in Europe; raising their profiles and enhancing their international reputations by encouraging contacts in countries and areas considered to be strategic priorities; improving mobility options for students, teaching staff and researchers; and promoting quality teaching, with a clear commitment to interuniversity degree programmes, programmes in English and online training. With a view to providing support for the European research activities undertaken by each of the partner universities and to increasing the number of proposals they submit to European research programmes, my main tasks at the Brussels-based Office for the Promotion of European Research Activities (OPERA) of the A4U are- Support the A4U and its researchers in their efforts to make their research more competitive at the European and international level- Identify new policies and funding opportunities of interest to the A4U universities and their researchers- Participate in and influence European R&D and innovation policymaking- Provide personalized assistance in Brussels to researchers participating in European projects. As of October 2021, participation of A4U in H2020 accounted for 587 projects (275 out of which corresponds to Pilar I - Excellent Science, with 90 ERC grants) and an economic return of more than 270M€ for the period 2014-2020.

The BIGDATPOL research group is an ambitious team led by Prof Dr Wim Hardyns at the Department of Criminology, Criminal Law, and Social Law, Ghent University. Prof Dr Hardyns has been awarded a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council to develop an evidence-based big data policing model that will be tested in several European cities. Revolutionising Policing with Big Data: Big data policing can be seen as an innovative information-driven policing strategy. It uses advanced statistical methodologies to analyse historical and real-time data, enabling us to predict with greater accuracy when and where there is a high risk of new criminal activity. By learning from patterns, our algorithms empower law enforcement agencies to allocate resources proactively, ultimately leading to a reduction in crime rates. A European Endeavor: This groundbreaking research initiative addresses crucial gaps in the existing study of big data policing and will translate it into a European context. Currently, knowledge and expertise in this field are dispersed, hindering the development of effective strategies. Moreover, interdisciplinary collaboration is essential for a comprehensive understanding of this complex issue, spanning statistical-methodological, criminological, economic, legal, and ethical dimensions. Evidence-Based Approach: Our approach is innovative and radically different from the existing initiatives, which often lack transparency. Our objective is to unite and integrate the statistical-methodological, criminological, economic, legal and ethical dimensions of big data policing in an evidence-based model that will be tested by different randomized controlled trials across various European cities and built on the principles of an international and interdisciplinary approach. By doing so, we aim to not only refine the predictive accuracy of big data policing but also establish an international, interdisciplinary standard for its application.

Eurogoos, European Global Ocean Observing System
European Global Ocean Observing System, EuroGOOS, identifies priorities, enhances cooperation and promotes the benefits of operational oceanography to ensure sustained observations are made in Europe’s seas underpinning a suite of fit-for-purpose products and services for marine and maritime end-users. EuroGOOS is the European component of the Global Ocean Observing System of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC GOOS). EuroGOOS is registered as an international non-profit association under Belgian law (EuroGOOS AISBL) and its Secretariat is located in Brussels. Today, EuroGOOS brings together 42 members from 19 European countries providing operational oceanographic services and carrying out marine research. In addition, EuroGOOS coordinates five regional operational systems in Europe: in the Arctic (Arctic ROOS), the Baltic (BOOS), the European North-West Shelf (NOOS) and the Ireland-Biscay-Iberian area (IBI-ROOS), as well as the Mediterranean (MONGOOS). Strong cooperation within these regions enables the involvement of many more partners and countries. This forms the basis of the EuroGOOS work and is combined with high-level representation at European and global forums. EuroGOOS working groups and networks of marine observing platforms (task teams) deliver strategies, priorities and standards towards an integrated, sustained and fit-for-purpose European Ocean Observing System (EOOS).
