Cost Action Ca21110 - Netwoark
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and the single most common cause of pain and physical disability in older adults. An estimated 10% to 15% of all adults aged over 60 have some degree of OA, with prevalence being higher among women than men and likely representing underreporting which is common in many disease prevalence studies. Despite the growing OA epidemic and major socio-economic impact, the population is facing a staggering lack of disease-modifying therapies that can bring symptomatic relief and preserve joint function by preventing cartilage- and joint degeneration and thus delaying OA progression. The research specifically aimed at OA management in Europe is scattered and not strategically coordinated, although several networks have OA partly in focus, it minor part of their agenda en lacks the focus and dedicated commitment to coordinate progress. The main aim of EU-netwOArk is to set up the European Society for Osteoarthritis (EUSOA), with three major stakeholder groups, 1) patients, 2) clinicians and 3) researchers, both from academia and industry. The COST Action will allow us to start the process of building such a European Society, with the aim of coordinating and stimulating more interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, technological development and translation of the results to the clinic, aimed at improving the quality of life of those affected by OA in Europe. The area’s to be addressed in this Action are Primary prevention, Diagnostics, Treatment, Interaction (comorbidities) and Care Management. EU-netwOArk aims to boost new scientific breakthroughs on the five main OA themes.

Department Of Chemical Engineering Chis
The research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at VUB aims at developing creative solutions to challenging problems in the field of separation technology and catalysis by exploiting the new possibilities in materials engineering and nanotechnology. Key to this development process is a thorough understanding of the fundamental events, from the molecular scale to the real life application level. In our group, advanced experimental techniques (microfluidics technology, ultra high pressure instruments, high-throughput experimentation, …) are combined with state-of-the-art computer modeling methods, including molecular modeling and computational fluid dynamics, to obtain insight in the fundamental adsorption, diffusion, reaction and mass transfer effects. Integration into the traditional engineering methods allows a rational design of improved or innovative applications. Examples of current research themes are hydrocarbon separations using microporous solids development of novel capillary LC column formats, flow and mass transfer phenomena in HPLC, miniaturization and on-chip chromatography, controlled release of bio-active compounds, high-throughput catalyst screening, … On the education side, the Department of Chemical Engineering organizes the traditional courses in chemical engineering (heat and mass transfer, separation processes, reactor engineering, catalysis, environmental engineering, …) in both the Master of Science in Engineering: chemistry & materials and the Master of Science in Bio-engineering. In these courses, the importance of mathematical modeling and optimization techniques is always highly emphasized.

Research Group For Urban Development - University Of Antwerp
The aim of our research group is to contribute to the development of knowledge on urban development, focused on the sustainable transformation of the city. That knowledge development concerns both the spatial and process aspects of urban development. The dual perspective of our master program on Urbanism and Spatial Planning, which focuses on the design of innovative solutions as well as strategically implementing projects in a real policy context, is reflected in the research agenda of the research group. The research thus operates at a crossroads between social sciences, human sciences, and design. Hence, we are the only research team in Flanders that combines urban design with spatial planning within a single research group.

Technoeconomics
Techno-economic research considers technological innovations but assesses them from an economic viewpoint. We analyze the potential that a technology enables, like increased flexibility, improved efficiency, additional possibilities for new and existing customers. We calculate costs (initial investment and operational expenses) as well as (both economic and societal) benefits. Doing so, we can give insight in the overall feasibility of the suggested solutions. Technology choices, investment decisions, operational optimization, targeted market decisions can be supported by our approach. We support decision makers by translating technological innovation into business opportunities. We take up challenges in different application domains. We focus on telecom and data related technologies. Current fields of interest include smart mobility, smart energy, smart cities and smart media. We have a long-standing track record of collaboration with both industrial and academic partners, such as telecom operators, equipment vendors, solution providers, etc. We published over 250 papers in high-ranked journals and international conferences. We have been involved and are currently working in 30+ national as well as international projects.

Re-Place, Central Database Of New Approach Methodologies
The RE-Place project, coordinated by Sciensano and the VUB, is an initiative from the Flemish and Brussels government to stimulate the use of ‘New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)’. New and innovative technologies continue to be developed across the life sciences: computer modelling, artificial intelligence, sophisticated cell cultures, organ-on-a-chip and many more. These technologies are also referred to as ‘NAMs’. In regulatory toxicology, NAMs are successfully applied for different endpoints, especially in the field of local toxicity, thereby resulting in the use of less or even no experimental animals. For systemic toxicity however, the situation is more complex. The same is true for biomedical research, where despite the availability of cutting-edge technologies, animal experimentation is still needed in most cases. Nevertheless, even when this is the case, NAMs play a valuable complementary role to tackle these complex research questions. As the development of NAMs is continuously evolving, relevant information on NAMs may not always be easy to find by (young) scientists. In order to facilitate access to this type of information, the Flemish and Brussels government initiated the project “RE-Place” which aims to centralize existing expertise on NAMs in Belgium in one database. We are collecting information on all NAMs that avoid the direct use of animals, even if their results still must be combined with animal experiments. NAMs are thus not necessarily one-by-one replacement methods, but can contribute to the overall replacement and reduction of animal testing. They can thus also be a single step within a broader research strategy. In order to obtain such an up-to-date inventory, we need your help. Submit your knowledge on NAMs via By doing so, you will not only have access to a reliable overview of different NAMs, but also to names of experts and research centres who have expressed willingness to pass on their knowledge.
