Vzw Fibrores
Our Mission: Perform, stimulate and support Fibromyalgia research, impacting on diagnosis, treatment and socio-economic status of people diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. FibroRes vzw is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization that facilitates fundamental, translational and socio-economic research on Fibromyalgia. In addition, FibroRes intends to influence policy and strategic (politic) decisions that impact on the daily life, diagnosis and treatment of Fibromyalgia subjects. The organisation was established October 26th 2013 and has its registered office in Ghent, Belgium. Diversity is a key element in the organization, reflected in the experience of the volunteers participating. A great part of the board consists of researchers, albeit in different fields, including medical biotechnology, psychology, medical imaging, nursing and more. Fibromyalgia is a disease characterized by widespread pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbance and memory problems among other. It is generally accepted by researchers that the condition Fibromyalgia reflects an amplification of painful sensations through discrepancies arising in the way the brain processes pain signals. However, the cause and molecular mechanisms behind Fibromyalgia is unknown, as well as a proper treatment. The disease can in many persons be so debilitating (read: physical disability) that they cannot work or live a normal social life. Our promise “FibroRes: Research for a better understanding of Fibromyalgia” is the foundation of what we at FibroRes strive to achieve. We invite you to have a look at the projects running on

Augment, An Imec Research Group At Ku Leuven
The Augment Group conducts research on Human Centered Explainable Artificial Intelligence. We study how artificial intelligence systems, including large language models and predictive machine learning models, can be designed to be transparent, fair, and aligned with human values. Our work focuses on explainability, bias detection and mitigation, fairness, uncertainty communication, and human in the loop interaction. We investigate how people understand, question, and meaningfully steer intelligent systems, and how design choices shape trust and responsible use in high-impact domains such as education, healthcare, and public sector innovation.

Data Analytics Laboratory
The VUB Data Lab is a cross-disciplinary research group the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium. We focus on developing and adapting analytical tools and algorithms which retrieve valuable insights from data. We exploit the connection between data analysis and the properties of complex systems. In doing so, we develop data analysis tools based on information theory, nonlinear dynamics, ergodic theory, and statistical physics. The key technologies we currently focus on are data analytics, pattern mining, machine learning, deep learning, combinatorial optimization and process mining. The lab is headed by prof. Vincent Ginis, prof. Sam Verboven, prof. Filip Van Droogenbroeck, and Prof. Marie-Anne Guerry. We have strong ties with the AI research center, doing interdisciplinary research on Artificial Intelligence, as well as with the Applied Physics research group. The lab performs both fundamental and applied research, always in close collaboration with a wide network of (inter)national academic and industrial partners.

Department Of Chemical Engineering Chis
The research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at VUB aims at developing creative solutions to challenging problems in the field of separation technology and catalysis by exploiting the new possibilities in materials engineering and nanotechnology. Key to this development process is a thorough understanding of the fundamental events, from the molecular scale to the real life application level. In our group, advanced experimental techniques (microfluidics technology, ultra high pressure instruments, high-throughput experimentation, …) are combined with state-of-the-art computer modeling methods, including molecular modeling and computational fluid dynamics, to obtain insight in the fundamental adsorption, diffusion, reaction and mass transfer effects. Integration into the traditional engineering methods allows a rational design of improved or innovative applications. Examples of current research themes are hydrocarbon separations using microporous solids development of novel capillary LC column formats, flow and mass transfer phenomena in HPLC, miniaturization and on-chip chromatography, controlled release of bio-active compounds, high-throughput catalyst screening, … On the education side, the Department of Chemical Engineering organizes the traditional courses in chemical engineering (heat and mass transfer, separation processes, reactor engineering, catalysis, environmental engineering, …) in both the Master of Science in Engineering: chemistry & materials and the Master of Science in Bio-engineering. In these courses, the importance of mathematical modeling and optimization techniques is always highly emphasized.

Energy Systems Integration & Modeling Research Group
We develop models that can be divided into four main categories: • Operational models: Optimization models for the operation of electricity generation systems are developed and deployed. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) framework is typically used for these Unit Commitment (UC) type problems. In terms of model development, the focus lies on improving the thermo-mechanical link, taking into account unpredictability in reserve sizing/allocation/activation, including new technologies (e.g, power-to-gas, thermal systems in buildings), integrating supply and demand side, and improving computational efficiency (e.g, tight problem formulation, parallel computing). • Expansion planning models: For energy planning and scenario analyses, long term models like TIMES are used. The technical operational detail of such planning models is increased, aiming to effectively bridge the gap between detailed operational models (unit commitment type) and long term energy technology planning models. • Equilibrium models: Equilibrium models describe the interactions of various (market) actors in the liberalized electric power sector (e.g, consumers, generators, policymakers). These models are used to analyze the impact of strategic behavior and market power on electricity markets, as well as the effect of market design or policy interventions on the electric power systems' performance. • Agent-based models: Agent-based models describe the electricity system as a complex adaptive system. This modeling approach captures the complex interactions among the physical infrastructure, the actors' behavior, and the institutions that govern those behaviors in a power system. Agent-based models are used to provide insights into, e.g, strategic behavior in electricity markets or the adoption of distributed energy resources, as well as to analyze the effect of policy interventions on the evolution of the electric power system.
