Ku Leuven - Center For Social And Cultural Psychology
The Center for Social and Cultural Psychology (CSCP) is dedicated to the basic and applied study of social psychological and cultural psychological themes. Social and cultural psychology studies how people interact and how they think and feel about one another and about the world, both as individuals and as groups. It starts from the premise that all behavior is contextualized, and conversely, that individuals' and groups' behaviors constitute the social and cultural landscape. Our research spans a wide range of different methods and contexts, varying from controlled laboratory experiments that provide insight into the effects of specific contexts on psychological functioning, to real-life research in schools, organizations, and society as a whole.

Laboratory Of Plant Ecology
The Laboratory of Plant Ecology is a research group in the field of plant ecophysiology, which studies the physiological mechanisms underlying plant responses to environmental factors. We use and develop innovative plant sensors to measure various aspects of plant performance, such as photosynthesis, transpiration, sap flow, growth, and development. We also develop and apply process-based plant models as well as functional structural plant models (FSPM) to simulate and predict plant behavior under different scenarios. By combining sensor measurements and plant models, we create innovative plant-based control and stress detection systems that can optimize plant productivity and quality in various settings. We are active in both forestry (natural and urban forests) and agriculture (horticulture, orchards, vertical farming.).

Leuven Allergy And Clinical Immunology Research Group - Laci
The Leuven Allergy and Clinical Immunology Research Group is part of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation of the Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven, Belgium. Our group focuses on the discovery of new allergens/techniques available for optimising allergy diagnostics such as food allergens, aeroallergens, insect venom and drug allergens. Special emphasis is put on why allergen tolerance at the initiation of disease can be lost, how natural tolerance can occur or how tolerance can be restored. Moreover, we study the interaction between the environment and the host's epithelium, and how external stressors contribute to disease progression in upper and lower airways and in the gut. We study the role of local inflammation, the microbiome and epithelial barrier function in several animal models and also in human subjects with allergic diseases, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease, with specific interest in the underlying adaptive immunity and innate lymphoid cells. We currently accommodate 13 PhD students, 2 postdocs, 3 senior technicians and 1 data manager, all supervised by 5 principal investigators (clinician-researchers). The lab is embedded into the University Hospital, in close proximity of our collaborating groups. Director: Dominique Bullens Affiliated professors: Christine Breynaert, Peter Hellings, Rik Schrijvers, Laura Van Gerven

Lmib
Modern life science research is a highly multidisciplinary endeavor often requiring the joint analysis of highly heterogeneous data sources, such as large-scale single-cell multi-omics datasets, structured ontology-driven annotations, unstructured published literature and imaging data. Using a holistic approach, one can often detect patterns which provide deeper insights into the biological and/or pathophysiological processes under study. However, such data analysis approaches are complex when dealing with heterogeneous and highly dimensional datasets. By leveraging breakthrough advances in the fields of artificial intelligence and statistical modelling, our group aims to develop novel computational methodologies for data fusion and pattern recognition and apply them to further our understanding of human disease.

Msca Dn 6th Sense
6th Sense addresses the fundamental challenges of joint communication and sensing (JCAS) through an innovative and interdisciplinary program. In a concerted effort, the findings of 6thSense will be tailored to key 6G use cases to boost Europe’s position in the global communications market both from a talent and a technological perspective. While JCAS is essential to the digital transformation of Europe, significant research is needed before it becomes ready for widespread and large-scale industry deployment. 6thSense follows a holistic approach to address the challenges of JCAS: Challenge 1. Going beyond traditional sub-6GHz systems and enabling sensing in new B5G/6G communication bands, i.e, millimetre-wave (mmWave) and visible light; Challenge 2. Addressing distributed sensing and networking challenges through architecture and protocol design under (data) security and privacy considerations; Challenge 3. Handling the analytical complexity of JCAS by devising solutions that combine the strengths of classical signal processing and optimisation models with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques. 6th Sense concludes with a concerted effort to transfer fundamental research contributions to industry-relevant applications in healthcare, manufacturing, and automotive sectors. This project has received funding from the European Union’s EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation under the HORIZON-MSCA-DN-2022 Grant Agreement

Neurospace
Only a human can walk to a desk, recognize a suitable laptop, open this page, and make sense of its contents. This everyday act reveals something extraordinary: the human mind’s unique ability to combine specialized knowledge with flexible reasoning. NeuroSPACE explores the multidimensional space of the human mind, focusing on how domain-specific knowledge (like recognizing objects or social cues) interacts with domain-general abilities (like working memory, inhibition, or cognitive control). We aim to: 🧠 Map the structure of domain-specific mental representations 🧩 Model how they interact with domain-general processes 🧪 Track these mechanisms across development, expertise, and disorders Integrate behavioral, neuroimaging, and computational tools, ranging from fMRI and EEG to DNNs Funded by the Flemish government and KU Leuven under the Methusalem scheme, NeuroSPACE brings together the labs led by Hans Op de Beeck (HOPLAB), Bert De Smedt (MATHLAB), Céline Gillebert (Neuropsychology Lab Leuven) & Kobe Desender (DesenderLab). Together, we aim to uncover what truly makes the human mind unique, and how we can use that knowledge to help people thrive.

Qtox Doctoral Network
Chemical risk assessment typically involves extrapolation of effects observed in-vitro and in-vivo under laboratory conditions to predictions of effects at the ecosystem level. This is a very challenging task and current extrapolation models have limitations, notably due to a number of ecological processes that are disregarded by the models and the paucity of data for parameterisation and validation. QTOX will develop mechanistic knowledge and data-efficient modelling tools to bridge the gap between standard toxicity data and ecologically relevant endpoints arising from chronic, time variable exposures to chemical mixtures. The results will be achieved through an interdisciplinary and intersectoral research and training program in which 10 doctoral candidates will characterise the mechanistic processes describing the successive events from exposure to ecosystem-level effects and develop models for extrapolation of adverse effects across levels of biological organization under environmentally realistic conditions.
