Sadl -Spatial Applications Division Ku Leuven

SADL is a long standing cooperative initiative of several research groups of the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences of KU Leuven. The overall topic is the Geographic Information Science and Technologies (GI S&T) and their applications for physical land management and socio-economic assessments. SADL paves the way to transfer and validate research expertise and results in civil society. To this end, research projects are conducted and scientific consultancies are performed for public authorities and industry. Moreover post- and para-academic educational and training programmes are offered. This set of activities is completed by participation in more fundamental research programmes and academic education so that a seamless transition is possible between theory and applications. Het Steunpunt Centrale Toetsen in Onderwijs ontwikkelt rijke toetsen in functie van duurzame onderwijsontwikkeling. Het Steunpunt bestaat uit een consortium van alle vijf Vlaamse universiteiten (Universiteit Gent, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Universiteit Hasselt en Universiteit Antwerpen) en twee hogescholen (Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool en Arteveldehogeschool). Deze universiteiten en hogescholen bundelen hun expertise om de Vlaamse toetsen te ontwikkelen, af te nemen en te analyseren. Ze doen dit in opdracht van de Vlaamse regering en in nauwe samenwerking met het Departement van Onderwijs en Vorming en het onderwijsveld. Ugct

The Centre for X-ray Tomography (UGCT) is a UGent Expertise Centre which performs research on and with the X-ray micro-CT technique. UGCT also acts as a user facility that offers the use of X-ray CT to researchers of many scientific domains in their research. It was founded in 2006 and is one of the few CT centers in the world that cover the complete CT workflow: physics and instrumentation, data reconstruction and data analysis. The UGCT is operated by a multi-disciplinary team and is currently an interfaculty collaboration between 3 research groups: the Radiation Physics group, the Pore-Scale Processes in Geomaterials Research group and the Laboratory for Wood Technology UGCT performs research on laboratory based very high-resolution X-ray tomography and its applications, covering the complete imaging chain. This includes CT scanner development, simulation of the imaging chain, the study of novel imaging techniques, developing tomographic reconstruction methods (including iterative reconstruction techniques and GPU-based code) and 3D image analysis methods. The developed hardware and methodology are being used within UGCT for geological and wood technology research. As a user facility, UGCT offers external research groups and companies access to its unique combination of state-of-the-art in-house developed high-resolution X-ray CT systems and its CT expertise. The flexibility of the systems and the knowledge of the researchers involved allows to perform challenging experiments in various research fields, continuously pushing the limits of what is currently possible with CT.

DAE-Research is the research cell of the bachelor study program Digital Arts and Entertainment of Howest Kortrijk, where both demand-driven applied research projects and applied research projects on its own initiative are set up. The research projects are oriented on exploring new game, VFX, animation & film technology (hard- and software) and transferring that knowledge to the bachelor program as well as companies in different sectors. Besides entertainment purposes, technology can be used in multiple ways to stimulate innovation tracks in companies, social-profit organizations as well as a partner in research consortia. What is applied research? Scientific findings from university and other research labs, combined with experts’ experiences in the respective professional field and expectations of the envisioned end users, are creatively translated into innovative solutions and prototypes. This offers a surplus value for achieving the goals within the industry and/or social impact. In addition to projects on demand, DAE-Research also conducts exploratory research on its own initiative. Hereby, the potential surplus value of new technology, whether this is hardware or software, is mapped out to work out innovative solutions for the various sectors. Recent research topics are linked to our 6 majors within the DAE bachelor program: game development, game graphics production, independent game production, interactive sound production, VFX and 3D animation. Flanders supports the ET project with as goal to be the first in the world to build a third-generation gravitational-wave detector, in the Euregio Meus-Rhine (EMR). This future advanced observatory offers Flanders the opportunity to position itself at the forefront of the international scientific community and intensify the ecosystem of high-tech companies and leading research institutes in Flanders and the surrounding regions and countries. ET-Vlaanderen (ET-Flanders) is the Flemish organisation responsible to stimulate the contribution of Flemish companies to the development and use of the Einstein Telescope, thereby maximalizing the economic return for our region. In addition, we implement a pro-active policy to strengthen our candidature, together with the EMR partners. We also develop a wide range of communication and outreach initiatives to create societal support and instigate enthousiasm with youth for STEM educations.
