Synchromedia Laboratory
Synchromedia Laboratory for multimedia communication in telepresence is a research group was founded in 1988 as a part of the Department of Automation Engineering at the École de téchnologie supérieure of University of Québec, with founding members from 4 University of Quebec institutions. Effective Mars 2005, the group has been awarded a $4 million CFI grant to build a Pan-Canadian Consortium. The group works on a wide diversity of pertinent research areas. It also consists of several professors, researchers and graduate students, as well as adjunct members from other departments and universities. Synchromedia core theme consists in an intelligent and seamless integration of various perceptual modes of information that allows collaborative management and sharing of information, actions and behaviors beyond the mere multimedia teleconferencing and communication. Rather than using a conventional Client/Server architecture, we adopt an advanced open overlay self-scaling network architecture based on distributed and virtualized resources and grid computing paradigm. This results in the integration of various perceptual modes of information, and enables remote access and sharing of resources, responsibilities and services in synchronous/asynchronous manner among geographically dispersed actors. Ubc Robotics And Control Laboratory Rcl
The Robotics and Control Laboratory carries out research in medical robotics, medical ultrasound, medical image analysis, image-guided diagnosis, and interventions. Augmented reality techniques are being applied to research, like prostate surgery to ensure easier performance and improved outcomes. Artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques are applied to diagnosis in ultrasound, magnetic resonance, digitized pathology slides and other tissue images. Images are obtained from databases from collaborating hospitals and clinical collaborators with techniques developed in the RCL. Examples of techniques developed in the lab include shear wave absolute vibro-elastography and temporally enhanced ultrasound. Our techniques are applied to prostate and breast cancer diagnosis, kidney and liver disease diagnosis, prostate surgery and radiation therapy, epidural anesthesia guidance, and heart ultrasound. The lab is equipped with a dozen state-of-the-art ultrasound machines, two da Vinci robots with research interfaces, and many sensing and instrumentation systems. Graduate students, undergraduate students, and other engineers carry out research projects in the lab and associated labs under supervision and collaboration with faculty members in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, and the School of Biomedical Engineering, as well as industrial partnerships. Technologies developed in the lab have been transferred to manufacturers and are incorporated into products sold internationally. Software developed in the lab is currently used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The UBC Visual Cognition Lab is a vision science lab in the Computer Science and Psychology Departments of the University of British Columbia. Dr. Ronald A. Rensink is the principal investigator. We investigate visual intelligence – the way in which the human visual system uses the light entering the eyes to create a variety of perceptual experiences. We are interested both in exploring the mechanisms that carry this out, and the ways in which this knowledge can help with the design of effective visual displays. The University of Waterloo NanoRobotics Group consists of over 30 undergraduate students in programs ranging from Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics. We design and test microrobots to compete annually in the Mobile Microrobotics Challenge and Microassembly Challenge at ICRA. We are the only fully undergraduate team that competes annually, and have won two 1st place finishes, and have placed in the top 3 teams. We encourage and promotes innovation in Nanotechnology at the University of Waterloo. Every Fall Term, we recruit a diverse group of talented individuals. Team members gain experience in microfabrication, cleanroom techniques, electronics, and coding complex computational algorithms.
