At the institute’s sites in Dresden and Ingolstadt, researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI are developing technologies and concepts for mobility, energy, as well as safety and security – from forward-looking preliminary research to practical applications in everyday use. The institute collaborates closely with the universities TU Dresden, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg and Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt. Its transport-related research work ranges from the field of vehicle and propulsion systems to intelligent transport systems, and it also covers the areas of disposition, logistics and digital business processes.

We focus on experimental, theoretical and simulation-aided methods. Examples for what we do- Multi-Matrix-Prepregs for individualization of properties of fibre composite structures (e.g. morphing structures)- Metal-cfrp hybrid structures for load transmission into thin-walled high performance structures - Unconventional concepts of stiffeners for thermoset and thermoplastic composite structures - Integrated design and process design methods for aerospace applications ranging from preliminary design to detailed planning - High-speed (3 m/s) fibre placement technologies for complex three-dimensional structures - Automated draping-technologies with online impregnation - Process monitoring technologies and machine learning Thereby, our range of services includes basic research as well as applied research in co-operation with industrial partners. Moreover, we provide assistance in the development of products demanding requirements for lightweight constructions and manufacturing solutions. Within the scope of these projects, we additionally give our students an opportunity of developing their technical competencies in internships, student project works and thesis.

Profil der Graduiertenschule „Locating Media/Situierte Medien“ Gegenstandsbereich der Graduiertenschule ist die vielfältige Orts- und Situationsbezogenheit von Medien. Fokussiert wird zum einen die Konstitution von Medien durch lokalisierte Prozesse des Handelns und der Interaktion, wie sie seit einigen Jahrzehnten durch verschiedene Einzeldisziplinen und interdisziplinäre Forschungstraditionen untersucht werden (insbesondere der Medienwissenschaften, der Ethnologie, Linguistik, Soziologie, Politologie und Geographie, der Literatur, Kunst- und Theaterwissenschaften, der Medieninformatik und CSCW-Forschungen, und der Science and Technology Studies). Orts- und situationsbezogene Medienprozesse verlangen in der Gegenwartsforschung eine orts- und situationsbezogene Herangehensweise, die insbesondere durch medienethnographische Entwicklungen der teilnehmenden Beobachtung, der Situationsanalyse und der audiovisuellen Arbeit entwickelt wurde. In einer fortlaufenden Auseinandersetzung mit diesen methodischen Entwicklungen haben sich in den Kulturwissenschaften historische Forschungen herausgebildet, die orts- und situationsbezogene Medienprozesse untersuchen. Diese bisher eher sporadische Diskussion zwischen Gegenwartsforschungen und historischen Forschungen soll in der Graduiertenschule methodisch vertieft werden. Diese Aufgabe wird auch durch eine aktuelle Medienentwicklung forciert, in der ein Bündel neuer orts- und situationsbezogener Medienprozesse auftritt, deren Folgen noch nicht absehbar sind, von mobilen Medienangeboten und der mobilen Lokalisierung des Medienteilnehmers, über die Medialisierung öffentlicher Orte durch Kameras und Monitore, bis hin zur massenhaften Laienkartographie auf der Basis von Geobrowsern. Die Graduiertenschule soll die Entwicklung, Nutzung und Distribution neuer orts- und situationsbezogener Medienprozesse in eigenen Feldstudien erkunden.

Cologne Research Centre For Reinsurance
The Cologne Research Centre for Reinsurance analyses the latest developments in the reinsurance market and, where appropriate, monitors these through projects. In this, it links the research activities of the Institute of Insurance with practices in the reinsurance sector. Organising and carrying out the annual Cologne Reinsurance Symposium and the Annual Meeting of the Sponsoring Group Reinsurance are also part of the mission of the Research Centre. Under the direction of Prof. Materne, there are seven research associates employed at the Cologne Research Centre for Reinsurance. Financing is provided entirely through third-party funding by the Sponsoring Group Reinsurance, currently with the participation of 94 reinsurers and reinsurance-oriented enterprises. Combining lectures and research, students pursuing the Bachelor’s degree with the three-semester concentration in reinsurance, together with students pursuing the Master’s degree, are exposed to a broad spectrum of topics relating to the reinsurance sector, with a variety of excursions, lectures by instructors and guest lectures.
