Building Better Homes, Towns And Cities
Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities (BBHTC) is one of 11 National Science Challenges, funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise (MBIE) and its focus is housing. The Challenge develops findings that will empower public, planners and policymakers with reliable information and new tools for fresh thinking and better decisions. It is also discovering new pathways to address the long-standing housing challenges of our most disadvantaged and to support Māori into healthy homes. Housing is a fundamental human need. Every person is involved in housing, but we have needs and wants beyond simply a roof over our heads. A home should nurture and protect us. It should be hospitable. It should be dry, warm and insulated to keep us healthy. It should have clean air and sunlight. And it should be part of a community or built environment that also nurtures and protects us. Our vision is: Ka ora kainga rua: Built environments that build communities And our mission: Manaaki tangata: Co-created innovative research that helps transform people’s dwellings into homes and communities that are hospitable, productive and protective. BBHTC is focused on helping New Zealand develop spaces for generations and build thriving and sustainable cities and regions.
